Natural Selection

I used to play this a good deal a few years ago and it looks like they are continuing to keep the mod up to speed.

Does anyone play (or played) this in TPG?

I thought it was a fun mod ... Aliens vs. Marines with a Commander for the marines and something similar for the aliens. It requires teamplay to succeed and is a refreshing break for the standard frag fest.

... I'm thinking I might give it a go again to check out the updated mod.

... hmmm ... Ilast time I played it, it was a free mod ... I haven't gotten to the new version yet. I'll fire up steam and take a look.

Yep ... you are correct ... it is a shame. It was a good fun. Hard for them to build a community this way. They want $35 ... not sure I'll do it.

Looks like they are trying to go the way of DoD. I think NS2 is in beta testing still?

I can wait ... although I may put the free version of NS1 on and see if I can find an active server ... maybe. =)

FilePlanet: Half-Life - Natural Selection v3.2 Full Client

It appears they continue to update NS1, the free mod. I'll d/l that and give it a whirl again for ol' times sake. They intend NS2 to be a "stand alone" FPS, using the Steam engine.

Because EA doesn't charge you for mods of their games?

Edit; I'm pretty sure it isn't just a source mod based off OB or HL2. I think originally they were working it off the source engine but ended up rewriting from scratch.

Edit 2; "Our own custom engine. NS2 started life on the Counter-Strike: Source/HL2 Episode 1 source branch but has since moved to our own custom engine. All the gameplay code was written in Lua so most of the game translated over smoothly."

On a more related note, I have the NS2 beta and I love it, although I only played it for like an hour so far!

I think I saw somewhere that it was "Source related." Not sure what that means.

So you have found decent servers and population? Or is it sort of hit/miss? The game looks great in the videos, but I wouldn't pay for something that didn't have a population to support it.
