DS Owners, I need your help
So, I have a 13-year old nephew who is obsessed with Pokemon. I've been trying to ween him off it by playing a few 360 games with him whenever he comes to visit, but he's still almost constantly glued to his DS if we don't keep an eye on him.
Now, note that I don't mind him playing games as much as he does. Hell, we all do that. But, I'm trying to find a replacement for Pokemon, like a methadone for his heroin. I don't know shit about what's what on DS, so any suggestions would be extremely helpful. He does like Advance Wars, so something with quite a bit of depth as well as character progression/leveling would work well, I think.
Any advice?

my brother plays scribblenauts. Basically you write stuff and it gives you whatever you write in the game. So you need to get the star that's up in the air. you have a ramp so you write "bike" and get a bike and ride it off the ramp. At least thats how I understand it.

So you are looking for games that would keep him interested or peeled away from his Pokemon games that are also on the DS then?
If he likes the strategy and character development I can suggest a few.
Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days - While I don't have this yet, the series is pretty well done. It Disney/SquareEnix game if you are unfamiliar with it so there really isn't anything bad really in terms of violence/blood. Of course it is "violent" but not like bloody and gorey, just killing faceless creatures most of the time. I don't know how the controls work on the DS but you can get some nice abilities and combat options in the previous games. The only downside is if he hasn't played the other games for the PS2 and GBA, he probably won't know what is going on. But it might make him want to look into getting them.
Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume - A good addition to the Valkyrie Profile series. Requires a bit of strategy in a number of areas. Combat is unique in that you can have 4 characters attack the same target in a Siege and depending on the order you choose for your attacks the more damage you do. What I really enjoy is the fact that the story changes based on certain actions you make in game with 3 different possible endings so there is some good replay value there. The story can be pretty dark and twisted though as you have to/can sacrifice your allies to progress in the game (which is also how the story changes by the way). Only downside I can point out is for a DS game it the DS stylus does not work at all, so it just functions like a GBA game really but uses both screens.
Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon - Classic game. The control is very much like that of other Fire Emblem games. Great story and pretty lengthy from what I know of FE games (haven't beaten this one yet though, it is on my To Complete List).
Final Fantasy IV - I am a huge fan of the FF series, and FFIV is probably one of my favorite even before it came out on the DS (was originally released as FFII on the SNES if I remember correctly). They updated the graphics for the DS version though as they did with FFIII but they are slightly better than FFIII's DS remake. Great story, many hours of play and character development. Still haven't beaten it as well because I screwed up near the end (no saves near the end so you have to do several hours of work if you fuck up over again sometimes ) but that is what I love about it, it is a challenge and makes you think.
You could try Final Fantasy III for the DS as well, but if he is not already a FF fan, I'd go with FFIV as it does have better graphics and would be better to start him off on I'd say. FFIII brings different challenges to the table as it is greatly different from some classic RPGs, especially compared to the modern FF games.
That's about all I can think about for now. Hope it helps.

Chrono Trigger DS is a good port of the original, which is an incredibly kickass game.

I forgot CT was on the DS, probably because they didn't update the graphics if I recall and I already have the PS remake of it.
CT would definitely be a good one to get though. Just make sure he fully beats the game as it is possible to beat it without doing everything...
