08-31-10, 04:23 PM #1Metroid: Other M
Game launches today. Who else is looking to get this or already has it?
I plan to get it later this week. I'm a huge Metroid fan and have played almost every Metroid that has been released (minus the DS ones as of right now).
I'm looking forward to seeing how this game will play with the ability to do 3rd person and 1st with what looks like relative ease of transitioning. I'm also curious to see if you can choose to do 1st person all the time or 3rd person all the time. From what I've seen of the demos/footage on their site, it doesn't look like it though.
The game still looks pretty good so hopefully it won't be a disappointment.

Yeah, I loved the story of the Metroid Prime games, but it still didn't play as much like a Metroid because the motion between the 1st person and 3rd person moments seemed clunky.
With this being more so focused on 3rd person it seems, I'm hoping it'll be better or like I said above will give you an option to use one or the other.
Also, Gamestop have free overnight shipping until Sept. 4th if you are signed up for their weekly ads/news. I'll have to look at the email again to get the code. Tempting but I might just wait and get it at Best Buy as they should be having some Labor Day sales this coming weekend and I already have a $25 gift card I need to use there as well.

Hmmm. Thanks for the info.
I know I don't always agree with what the people at G4 say though so I'm still hopeful that I'll enjoy it. It sounds like some of the issues they had were similar things I had issues with in the Metroid Prime series (mostly controls and jumping from 3rd and 1st person). I can live with that.
The story does sound a little disappointing, but I'll still want to play it to make my own decision (and because like I said, I'm a huge fan anyways).
I'm hoping this is one of those reviews that I won't agree with then.

I'll never believe anything G4 says. In fact gamespot gives it an 8.5. Reviews for games are hard for me to trust anymore.

Well, I always thought of Samus Aran being like Ellen Ripley, not Lizzie McGuire. Unfortunatly Other M goes this route, which is kinda disappointing to say the least.
Besides, I don't think the Ninja Gaiden style of play works for Metroid, I think the only way to play Samus Aran in 3D is a First Person Shooter. Metroid Prime was amazing for me personally.

That review was much more favorable. Although since it is pretty linear, it doesn't sound like the replay will be as great. But then again, I really didn't get that feeling from the Metroid Prime series as well although I did enjoy them and the Wii controls really just made the aiming so much better and overall more enjoyable for me.
I've never actually played any of the Ninja Gaiden games so I'm not sure how that'll tie into this.
I'm with you though Wats, I always saw Samus as being more of a bad ass than a push over. I might not like that, but if they explain it well enough, it might make sense. Still sounds like that part will be a little disappointing though.
And from the sounds of it, at least you have a reason for not using your abilities. They have gotten better at that over the years as I remember the first ones were kind of like "oh you crashed and your stuff was scattered across the planet somehow." In recent years it has been more specific and more believable such as it was damaged and when you pick something up it is either fix, reactivated, or just some new alien device.
Metroid Fusion was probably the most unique though since your whole suit was effected and as such gave you things differently than the previous installments of the series.
As for the reviewers themselves, it mostly just seems like a difference in taste and expectations that caused for the huge gap in ratings for the game. Perhaps the G4 staff had problems with the controls more so than the Gamespot team (which is what it sounded like to me). Who knows. It is good to read both though and see their differing opinions. I got a better idea of what to expect from the game because of it so I'm glad and still pretty excited about the game.
