Did your XBOX break today?
New required update can cause your XBOX to stop reading discs.
If this happens they will replace it with a 250GB slim and a year gold membership for FREE.
Free Xbox 360 if Mandatory Update Trashes Old Unit?
First time I have HOPED that my XBOX would break, waiting for this update to roll out...

What if your system just happens to stop working for other reasons after the update? Will they actually do an inspection to see that it was the update that broke them. Like what if it RRoD on you, would that be cause for the same replacement? I'm just saying shit happens, could be a coincidence or could be something up with the update they don't know about fucking stuff up.
I don't own a XBOX 360 so this really doesn't affect me at all, I'm just curious as that actually sounds like a good thing MS is doing instead of just saying "not our fault" or giving out some cheesy like just a replacement part or something.

Re: Did your XBOX break today?
From what I read (I did a lot of reading hoping to find a clue mine might do this) but they have identified all of the XBOX revision(s) that are affected. You have to send them your serial number, and if it is one that has the specific optical drive that is a problem they will replace it. Apparently they did a lot of testing, this update is huge because it removes old portions of a disc reserved for DRM and it opens up 1GB of data for developers to use. But, some optical drives could not be updated or were bricked because their firmware could not receive the update. It also introduces new DRM methods for developers that are harder to beat.

Yeah I need a larger HDD my 20GB is full of Rock Band songs :/.
I actually think its a great thing. They needed to do the update, it prevents people from stealing software, the did a lot of testing to identify any issues and they are doing their best to compensate those who get hit with issues. I think they are trying to improve their image and with all the problems on the PSN they are really capitalizing.
