M4 or AK Preference or an actual difference

Who is your favorite "old school" artist? By that I mean back in the late 80s early 90s, or anytime. It doesn't have to be rock or rap, it can be anyone.

Mine is Vanilla Ice because I think his songs are hillarious.

Ive been wondering this recently. Is there a difference between the AK and the M4 or is it just merely someone's preference? I ask this because I've seen some performance differences, and time after time I see people swapping AKs for M4s and vice versa.

Just curious...
