    Re: XP or Linux?

*grin* Read the rest of what I posted dude, I know you guys aren't amateurs. I am simply saying that, given *time* (the crucial qualifier here) a Linux box can be more responsive as a game server, *for certain games*.

Given that none of us have all that much time (time being money and all) I don't question TTP leadership's judgment in the slightest. All I am saying is that sweeping generalizations aren't always accurate.

Nor is every solution practical for our purposes. I know *I* wouldn't have time to sit there futzing with a server to get everything tweaked just right, no matter how much geek cred I'd get for doing it. Now, compound this with how poorly EA's server software performs under IDEAL conditions for which it was designed, and you will never hear a word of recrimination from me regarding your choice of server platform.

of course it's not an option. it would be foolish on your part to run a game server with games that were originally developed, tested, and shipped on windows, only to be later ported to linux for the small demand of linux gamers to play. EA has a hard enough time pulling their head out of their ass to create quality products for windows, much less linux
exactly. A similar argument for the linux lovers would be "hey, my Mac works great, games are great for it, game servers are better on mac".

    and that.......is ridiculous.

I do seem to recall some Source issues with certain Linux kernels, as well. I woulda thought someone would have fixed that by now. *shrug* ain't my problem, I point my gun, and out come bullets.

We have plenty of in house linux gurus. As well as those we pay.

And given "time", we discovered that Source games, and every game since, is less supported, less patched, less optimized, and less effeciently managed on linux.

If the do-it-yourself crowd likes to pride them selves on boxes in their closet running red hat 0s1.456xbl v.21, hooray for them. But the professionals......got over that. And they didn't do it because windows was cheaper, or free.

But it is our problem. Problematic kernels = lack of stability = crashes = server down = you no bullets coming out of you gun.

Yeah, as I said (and you pointed out) it's been a while since I ran any game servers. I've certainly never attempted it with Source games, nor do I plan to. That's why we pay YOU guys

*laugh* Very succinctly put. I was more referring to patching the kernel. but as you say, poor performance means a lack of bang-bang goodness.

we ran linux for a long time, since it made our crons and other functions easier to manage (at least according to our linux gurus).

but eventually......we hit a wall that the linux community wasn't fixing. So....if we wanted to play Source games like CSS and DoD, and survive....we were forced to switch.

windows has had none of the issues our linux servers gave us long ago. But I think we ran TTP CSS on linux for at least a year.

    Re: XP or Linux?

I assume it's running on 2K3 now? Just out of curiosity...

You know, I think I am going to set up a Source server in my house, just to see how horrible it truly is. I know running a regular CS server was a pain in the ass until I got it all tweaked, couldn't imagine how nasty a CS:S one would be.

What can I say, I'm a glutton for punishment.

    Re: XP or Linux?

it's not impossible.....and even in a single day of use, you won't see much of an issue.

but run it 24/7, all day, every day, with people on it, all day, every day......and then you see the problems.
