Re: tips please
there is only one spawn position per team, but where you spawn in that area is random. um, as for ranks, the only ranking system is the server stats, theres no actual cpl. or stuff like that to show up beside your name. if you want to show your competitiveness, there are lots of opportunities in the CAL league, i don't know too much about it personally because...well ive never bothered with it.
Lots of resident clans are involved though so don't get discouraged.
It's an easy game to get into, it'll be hard for a bit, but its very simple. You just need a good eye and good reflexes...
you can choose to blow out your ears with headphones so you can hear their footsteps...i personally rather look for them.

also if you survived the whole last round you still have all the stuff you ended the last round with.

Re: tips please
Further, there are no 'level ups'. You don't 'unlock' anything, and you only take 'commands' from the person calling the strats (strat=plan for the round). You do use your mini-map just as much as you do in BF2, but you also have to be able to hear. Every little footstep signals whether the enemy is approaching from the right or left, so this is why many people use headphones.
Traditionally, on de_ maps (bomb maps, eg. de_dust2, de_piranesi) CT's will split up into two main groups, one holding one bombsite, one holding another. And usually as a terrorist, you will all travel as a group. In the beginning, try and restrict yourself from using flash grenades, as new players tend to flash their own team (though they may be only trying to help). Further, learning how to play with an mp5, p90, or a silenced m4 (silence it by right clicking while holding m4) might be a tad bit easier, as it's easier to compensate for recoil. I'm sure you're familiar with burst shooting, as you play BF2.
Take Duddy's advice...watch the more well-known regulars when you're dead, it'll give you an idea of how to play.

As a T, normally, you'll all rush as one big group or two small groups. As a CT, liek I said, you split up, but I (and most others) won't mind if you tag along and post up shop next to us. However, people get mad when you 'block' them...basically standing RIGHT NEXT to someone, so if they're trying to move out of the direction of a nade or shots fired, they don't get stopped because you're in their path.
