So every time I start Steam I am inundated with friend requests because I believe Steam is evil and I will some how lose my SteamID from a hacker if I ever use their friends network. I have never accepted one request in all of my time playing on Steam.

My question is how many of you use Friends and should I be using it as well?

A crap ton. Just never give out your password, or any other vital info, and you will be fine.

The friends for steam is completely safe. I had my account stolen because I was stupid and when to a link that a comprimised friend sent me and input information I shouldn't, but that was my fault. So the friends list is safe as long as you keep your head and don't input information you shouldn't anyway.

Don't follow any suspicious links and don't ever type out your password and you're fine.

Steam friends rocks... ALMOST as much as xfire.

I use Steam's friend feature a lot. It helps when getting involved in a community. I would also get an avatar and join a Steam group while you're at it. TTP has one. It's nice to right click a friend and use the join game button. Gauge and I use it almost exclusively for communications. You can even voip chat with a friend and invite several into the chat. I've created a chat room with several people in it and converted it to VoIP while we tried out an MMO. Don't be scart.

Feel free to add me to friends. I'll pm you the e-mail address to search on.

you can turn that off ya know

With well over 200 friends on my list it was essential to turn that off, and turn off avatars lol, I'd never find anyone in there, hell... I still can hardly find anyone in there xD but when I go to clean up, I find most are in res clans, or regs or something, and I hate to delete em lol. But needless to say, it's safe =P

settings > friends > uncheck the box that says when any friend comes online show a notification.

works fine for me. I hate that it does that though, it should only pop up if you are already online and a friend comes online, not just cause you connected. I have like all my boxes unchecked, it would be nuts if I didn't.
