The friends for steam is completely safe. I had my account stolen because I was stupid and when to a link that a comprimised friend sent me and input information I shouldn't, but that was my fault. So the friends list is safe as long as you keep your head and don't input information you shouldn't anyway.

I use Steam's friend feature a lot. It helps when getting involved in a community. I would also get an avatar and join a Steam group while you're at it. TTP has one. It's nice to right click a friend and use the join game button. Gauge and I use it almost exclusively for communications. You can even voip chat with a friend and invite several into the chat. I've created a chat room with several people in it and converted it to VoIP while we tried out an MMO. Don't be scart.
Feel free to add me to friends. I'll pm you the e-mail address to search on.

settings > friends > uncheck the box that says when any friend comes online show a notification.
works fine for me. I hate that it does that though, it should only pop up if you are already online and a friend comes online, not just cause you connected. I have like all my boxes unchecked, it would be nuts if I didn't.
