    mic not working in CS:S

I reinstalled Windows 7 yesterday. My mic works in Ventrilo, in "test" button in steam, and the "test" button within CS:S... but it doesn't work when I try to use it in-game. I have it configured for press-to-talk (ALT key) and it's showing the correct device. When I press the ALT key, I don't even see the speaker icon on my HUD to indicate it's ready for me to talk. Does anyone have any hints on how I can fix this?

I tried setting it to voice activation... no luck. One thing I have not tried yet, though, is to quit Ventrilo while playing CS:S. I'll give that a shot next, but that was never a problem in the past, so I don't think it'll fix it.

I don't have any other mics. Windows will list all recording devices, even if there's nothing attached to them. I don't think there's a way to disable the inactive inputs.

I have on-board audio which produces a hissing noise in my audio, and I can hear my hard disk when this happens, so I installed a Sound Blaster Audigy 1 that I had from my old computer. However, since then, I bought a Sennheiser USB headset which uses its own drivers. The on-board audio isn't being used for anything, so I can probably disable that in the BIOS. The Audigy is used to output sound to my external speakers.

One other thing I'd like to try is a steam voice conversation with someone. Maybe that will tell me if the problem is indigenous to CS:S or if steam has something to do with the problem.

    Still no dice.
    • Disabled on-board audio from the BIOS.
    • Rebooted.
    • Quit Ventrilo.
    • Changed to voice-enabled (not push-to-talk) activation for chat.

This is driving me nuts! :8

OK, I think I found the problem. CS:S was bound to "k" for radio comm. Geeze, the problem and answer was right there in front of me. I'm such a noob!

also for future referance go to your volume bars in your control panel where it has all the bars for each of your audio outlets etc, and go to options -> advanced, and it will add on another bar that wasn't there, and sometimes that bar is x'd for mute.
