Should we look into getting a 3rd CSS server?
Should we look into getting a 3rd CSS server?
These last few weeks it feels like we've had both servers full or nearly full during peak hours. Last night on Lost Temple we might have even had a server full of or nearly full of reservists (could someone with the ability to please check on this?).
Note: The graphs below only show activity for the last 24 hours. Is there a way to show data for the last month, but at the same time show average number of players on at certain times in the day? I think this would show that we have been at capacity or near capacity during peak hours for the last few weeks.
Regular CSS Server
CSS No AWP/Auto Server

Re: Should we look into getting a 3rd CSS server?
That's why I'm asking/bringing this up. I know we used to have three CSS servers... and sometime last year we shrunk that down to two... but from my perspective that seems like a while ago and recently our servers seem to be full on a consistent basis, especially with the recent Steam sales and corresponding influx of new players visiting our servers each and every day.
I don't have access to better data, so I threw up what I could and hopefully someone can provide more.
Here's another way to look at it... below is the same graph over six months.
Regular CSS Server
CSS No AWP/Auto Server
Unfortunately, what it seems to show is average number of players on per day instead of showing the number of players on at specific times in the day. However, I think we can still infer some good information here.
Remember... based on yesterday's data, the CSS Server is "fully" populated with 22 players from 11am to 11pm. That's 12 hours.
Likewise, the CSS No AWP/Auto Server is "fully" populated with 22 from 4pm to 1am. That's 9 hours.
What the 6-month graphs are showing is that for the past few months the CSS Server has about 11 players playing on average per day and the CSS No AWP/Auto Server has about 10 players playing on average per day. Let's try to better understand what that might mean.
So my calculation would go something like this...
Regular CSS Server
22 players x 12 hours active / 24 hours in a day = 11 on average per day
CSS No AWP/Auto Server
22 players x 9 hours active / 24 hours in a day = 8.25 on average per day
These results are close to the 6-month graph results, so I am inferring that our servers have been at capacity during peak hours for approximately the last two or three months.I broadcast gaming videos on Twitch TV and my finished videos are on YouTube! Okay, gotcha.
I trust your judgment and I'm curious what your explanation is, but from my perspective it seemed like now might be a good time.I broadcast gaming videos on Twitch TV and my finished videos are on YouTube! Recently I shoutcasted the Counter Strike Tournament at PAX Prime 2012!

Re: Should we look into getting a 3rd CSS server?
I often wait for a spot during peak hours. It can take a few minutes to 30, but I think that a third server might dilate the average spread of players on each server so no server is full that much if ever. Unless there is in fact more then like 40ish people waiting to play on the 2 servers when they are full.
If I remember you even used to have a Gungame server that was again from memory, not used a lot and was usually full or empty with mostly regs.

Re: Should we look into getting a 3rd CSS server?
No way. If you get a 3rd server you spread out the regs across 3 servers instead of 2. A near full to full server will pull in more new players who are just surfing the server list for a certain number of players or a certain map.
I am not sure what the current numbers are, but if CSS was able to reach a reservist spot for each spot in the server I would be ok with another server. ex:
20-39 Reservists == 1 Servers
40-59 Reservists == 2 Servers
60-79 Reservists == 3 Servers
I get the feeling that we don't even have 40 CSS Reservists. So my assumed numbers may not translate to reality. But, I do recognize that the two servers are very popular during peak hours.
If you really want another server, do what a lot of people have been suggesting... get the new people into the forums. It is really hard to not like this community once you get into the forums and the more regs we have the more a new server becomes needed and wont be wasted.
