Thread: Recruiting TPG CS:S for folding@home!

We have 11-12 TPGers who are actively folding now and our team is going up in the ranks fast. We could definitely use some help though!

I signed up. We'll see how it works out.

Remember reading about this some years ago, and how they were starting to utilize GPUs for specific operations with a huge increase in productivity. Like the idea of distributed computing for sane real world applications (unlike SETI). Was curious at the time, but still working out the best way for me to participate actively.

Have an OC'd 8800Ultra and I leave my PC on 24/7. Idle power consumption isn't bad. But the heat/noise/power profile under load is excessive - noise a big issue, this resides in the bedroom. Also pushing any system after years of primarily idle use has a propensity to ruin it. Rather have a backup gaming PC first. However, still looking at running this under a schedule to start/stop service, and would be acceptable (run it while I'm at work)

My question there would be how well the application copes with sudden interruptions. e.g. how much work is lost when you do that?

Edit: Well ran it for an hour as a monitored test. Peaks my card to 85 C and was able to run through almost a 3rd of the work 3100/10000. So not bad, and over the course of 9 hours could get approx 30000 completed (or was that 300k). Drop in the bucket, but im not at home during those periods and every contribution counts. Will give it a scheduled trial run this work week

I have about 20 PC with advanced video cards and PS3. I have it set up on 3 PC and PS3 so far. More to come.

Whoa, seriously Rad? That kicks ass!

Greyvee, great to see that you are trying it out. I think it's definitely more concrete and directly helpful than SETI... there are links to a ton of papers/theses/etc written using folding. You can set it up to use less than 100% of your GPU w/directions on the website. If it crashes midway the most you lose is 15 minutes of work and that is adjustable (the interval at which it saves to disk). It only uploads when its done the entire work unit, and you can pause at anytime and lose no work. Generally my GPU (8800 gt) folds on work unit in 4 hours.

If you want to make the xard cooler use rivatuner to put the fan speed up. I can send you the tutorial I found on making it track heat and speed up accordingly, very well. Its louder but i f you want to keep temps low (I am 68 degrees at 100% load w/60% fan speed) its useful. Loading at 50% at bedtime or something like that will also keep it cool and the fan at minimum. I will link you when I get home... at the airport right now.

Just got it working on both cores of my 5970. Kind of exciting!

I decided to go and uninstall all the unneeded programs from my laptop as it has been running slow lately. I was scrolling down the list and found "Folding @ home" that has been running on here, non stop (because I hardly ever turn this thing off) for like 3 years now. Haha.

Oh wow, nice! That might make it run a bit slower and would make gaming a little tough, but you can set it up to not start at Startup and it's easy to pause. Feel free to re-install and join up if you want.
