    FPS drop

    As most of you know I have problems with my fps being low, with a pretty good graphics card. Could the fact that I dont have windows service pack 2 hurt my fps?

    Re: FPS drop

    It could be a number of things, but I dont think SP2 is one of them. I dont even have SP1 and my fps is fine.

    Im thinking its one of these factors:

    * Graphics Drivers
    * Mobo
    * PSU
    * Various Tasks Running

    Post your computer specs.

    well there is a post with all my specs and opinions of what could my problem, so I wont repeat everything. Fact is I was getting 90 fps, then blam cs source updates and my fps drop to 30. Ive done everything imaginable, so I may just get a new comp.

    Upgrading to Service Pack 2 wouldn't hurt. Make sure you have up-to-date drivers installed - I'm sure you already checked your rates.

    Sometimes XP can become loaded down with crap and a new, clean OS install will answer these kind of questions.

    FYI...

    Without Service Pack 2, you are wide open to TONS of spyware and viruses. Always upgrade to the most current Service Pack. Spyware can definately hurt your performance.

    Rock,

    I recommend a clean install, getting the latest drivers, and make sure you have SP2. You will be running good in no time.

    I definately agree. I have had people bring their computers to me that were just crawling. I mean almost unusable, would barely even bring up IE or any program for that matter. Would install a couple different spyware programs, get it all cleaned out and it would run like new. The worst I saw was 1400 spyware infections and that was found with just one program...adaware. Adaware is a good free program. It may not catch everything, but it will get the bulk of it. I try and run it at least once a month.

    Re: FPS drop

    Hmm... the only thing I havent done is reformat (simply because it's a family comp) and/or install SP2. So im guessing once I install SP2 run my anti virus and adaware programs, I should be performing better.

    Re: FPS drop

    After the reinstall, you should be running better. Just make sure you put on SP2 after you have a clean install. I suggest backing up any of the family stuff and going straight for the reinstall. But I also understand if that is an uption that may be frowned upon.

    Re: FPS drop

    One thing no seem to mention is this:

    On a new card, make sure that ur card slot is equal to the card itself. And what i mean is this, I had a older put that only had a 1X AGP slot, well i put a 8/16X AGP card in it. It would get choked bad, so check ur motherboard and vid card to make sure that they match up right.

    Sorry i don't know how old ur machine is.
