Debug Assertion error??

When I try to connect to steam it gives the error:

Debug assertion failed
Program: C:\Program files\valve\steam\steam.exe
File: BootStrapperApp.cpp
Line 393

When I click retry microsoft closes steam program.

I have had this error before and a re-start usually fixes this but this time it did not work.
I checked steam forums and X-fire could be a cause so I un-installed and still nothing.

Any Ideas?

Try downloading steam off a website. That's pretty much all I can say about this issue.

You're right Hero, It appears one problem may be X-Fire... I hope this extended explanation helps you.

X-FIRE
If you are getting this error and you have X-Fire installed, please uninstall X-Fire from the Add/Remove in your Control Panel.
You must reboot after uninstalling this to remove the network hijack that X-Fire installs.

COMPATIBILITY MODE PROBLEM
If you are getting debug assertion errors then there is a very good chance that you have Steam.exe or HL.EXE running in compatibility mode under WinXP.

You need to change this back to normal mode by right-clicking on Steam.exe & HL.EXE, select properties and then there is a tab where you'll see "compatibility mode" options.

You need to uncheck "Run this program in compatibility mode" then hit apply. The next time your run the game you should no longer see that error.

The entire error message might look something like this:

Debug Assertion Failed Program: D:\Progra~1\steam\steam.exe File:\p4clients\rel_beta\projects\common\misc\win3 2registry.cpp Line: 447 bCloseRet == 0L (Press Retry to debug the application- JIT debugging must be enabled)

If all goes well, my Son will be born tomorrow. They have taken Jenny is to be induced due to a problem she has been having. The baby is fine. There are no problems with him, but they have decided to make him arrive rather than leaving it any longer.

So Thomas Martin Smith should be born tomorrow, the 23rd August 2007.

And you might not see much of me for the next few months.

Iam all excited along with you my friend. This is good news, I cant wait to see some baby pics. You make sure you tell her we all wish nothing but the best and give her a big hug from us.
