    Hi

Someone on the server told me to register here. I play almost exclusively on TTT so I figured it was only polite. I'm just a casual old Quakeworlder who plays for sport, so what's up?

Just for your sake, it is TTP, not TTT. Welcome though.

    RE: Re: Hi

TTP, got ya. And I bought the Silver package of HL2 as soon as it was available. Played DoD since beta 0.3 something, also have spent quite a bit of time in Planetside, Quake II, TFC (Quakeworld version) and my favorite of them all (though now sadly defunct) the old E#M# Quake maps.

Anyone here ever fire up DMC? I can't seem to find anything there but bots.

    RE: Re: Hi

Yeah, DMC = Death Match Classic. It's a pretty close representation of the real thing, but it's missing that Quake Engine atmosphere.

If I could be arsed about it I'd try to set Quakeworld back up...not even sure it's still running. There was just something simple and raw about Quake1 Deathmatch that hasn't been captured so well since.

    RE: Re: Hi

It's the control of Quake I liked. Other games these days are more fun, but you can't do half the OMG SK1LLZ things in any other game. Rocket-jumping, bounding, skate-nading, timepwn (arriving at each item the second it respawns consistantly and purposely...basically running branching paths through the map on a time schedule), etc.

I like DoD:S, and you'll see me using a lot of old QM techniques especially with my nades. A lot of people claim they don't like quake-style gameplay in DoD, but I think they're just talking about the running and gunning. There's more to it than that. It's an awareness of your mass and the ability to throw that mass around while still hitting your target. It starts with circle-strafing and gets much more complex from there, especially once you start figuring in lines of fire, crosspatters, likely avenues of threats, immediate and secondary obstructions, player forced management (taking actions to make an enemy mis-predict your intentions and knowing how to follow up on such), covering fire (almost no one undestands this principle), etc.

As the games have grown in complexity over the years the available techniques have increased, but the techniques I see used online have decreased. I'm still getting the physics of this game down, and there's a few new and interesting techniques I'm experiementing with right now...jumping and pulling back in the air right as you release a grenade (as a german) will BACKspin it...I've knocked it off walls and had it roll up behind the enemy position. I'm not quite adept at the technique yet, the timing is difficult as is the angle of release. It's still hit-or-miss now, but if I can get it down I'll be able to back a grenade up anywhere I was as long as there is a wall behind the enemy.

I like seeing people THINK. Quake was basic, not much flash, and the Rocket Launcher was the only real weapon of pwnage. People had to come up with some interesting tricks to stand out, and people did. I much more admire a player with a lower score who attacks the game from a tinkerers perspective than I do a player who gets in the dark coners the whole map and just concentrates on killing and not playing. There's a big difference.

What's making this game difficult to trick on is all the objects seem sticky. Rub up against a sandbag...stop. Get within two feet of a corner...stop. It's like everything reaches out and grabs the player model. I keep jumping up on sandbags only to get snagged on the top.

There's a few things I'm looking at right now trying to get down on an instinct-level. Source is a strange engine, everything has a super-dense feel to it.
