Re: Aiming: Mouse vs Joystick
If someone could set it up, wonder how well a joystick could play these precision games? missionred.com | arcade
I would think the mouse can easily out perform. Oh,. and the games on that site I speak of are the reflex ones.

edit: WTF why did all my spacing disappear
I will say that I have seen console gamers I know play and I am amazed at how precise they can aim. Most good ones I know don't use aim assist also.
I think if you took the same game and 2 great players that have played it for some time that the difference would not be as much as people think.

Re: Aiming: Mouse vs Joystick
Oohhhh no, make no mistake, there is a level at which joysticks do not even compete against mice (when reactions and actions are faster than the joysticks movespeed, which is rather slow (faster you make it the harder and more uncontrollable corrections become). Sure there are some people that have en-grained the muscle memory of many shots but when compared with an equally skilled pc player, they are not even remotely, a match. Additionally, you'd see a hugggee difference when comparing a pc player vs console when fast, sequential target acquisition is needed (killing many sparsely distributed enemies, one shot to the next).
But ya, i to hate console games *shivers*. IMO, screw wsad though ESDF ftw!

Re: Aiming: Mouse vs Joystick
i've been talking with some random dude on youtube about this too for like 3 hours it got very ugly(he was saying M/K are attachable to PS3 i was saying i'm talking about Aiming with Controller compared to mouse).i've played FPS on Wii,PS3,360,PSP,PC and must say PC was the best.cuz put the joystick on MAX and turn it goes out of control on normal it's slow.Sniping....NO WAY using rocket lunchers was also a pain in the ass.so bottom line without Aim assist it blows!but PC not much better if you have a 800 DPI mouse the higher the DPI goes the less you gotta move the mouse i use a 2400 dpi mouse which can change to 1600/800 by a bottom on it.also controller is confusing and mapping the keys are hard on it (change weapons to secondary melee or bomb, fast melee, smoke, frag, reload, shoot, iron sight, run, jump, duck, lying on ground, using planting grabbing or opening)all those need individual keys...i have a very simple way to test this!anybody heard of House Of the Dead series?those games were just shoot shoot shoot and reload.they have co-op mods too so 1st player mouse second player game pad or keyboard the one with the mouse always have the higher score and better weapons and more life.

Re: Aiming: Mouse vs Joystick
A mouse tracks position over time with a scaling factor for sensitivity purposes. Joystick position over time could be correlated to the first derivative of mouse position over time (except for the scaling factor is now on the derivative). I simply believe it is harder for your eyes/brain/fingers to make the conversion from desired position into desired cursor speed that will lead to that position (your brain is basically integrating its movements). It is one more thing for your brain to process. I would also say that, for this reason, it is easier for your brain to map mousepad to muscle memory.
Also, don't forget about joystick deadband. This adds a non-linearity to the joystick position/cursor position that your brain must compensate for.
For a more thorough explanation of feedback loops and compensation, see: Control theory - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The only reason I would ever consider using a joystick in an FPS would be for player movement throughout the world. The ability to slowly walk using a form of analog control vs the digital inputs of a keyboard is very nice, and can even help compliment the mouse input (this is all assuming that said game has analog player movement, I am not even sure which PC games do/don't). Someone needs to make an analog input keyboard (maybe they do?).Last edited by ElFuriosoGato; 07-20-12 at 07:29 PM.
