I would be up for mods, if we went towards using mods though, we should look at tekkit. It is a mod pack that blends all the best MP minecraft mods together and they also have a pre built server download for all the mods that you just have to download and then change the settings on to your likings.

Just ran a test with tekkit. Kind of a bukkit/spout/lots of mods rolled into one server setup.

Looked pretty interesting til I realized it was only running minecraft 1.1 server base. So that will be 100% no go there. What I want to build requires the 256 world height and if (big if) we do this I do NOT want to lose the worlds we have which are now 1.2 worlds.

Only thing I found to download there was a bunch of class files and shit... Found nothing executable.

isnt any, they cannot distribute the minecraft.exe, open minecraft.exe with 7zip as archive, put files in there. delete the meta folder in it. though i've never patched a server exe you should read the readme's
