    Get the Authenticator App

Log into battlenet, click on security options and select authenticator. Supposed to make your account more hack proof. You will need to load an app on your phone or get the USB dongle though and use them when you log into the game...

Already did it. I always use 2-factor authentication whenever available. Keeps the douchebag hackers who have no lives from compromising your account, or at least makes it harder.

    Been using one since WoW.

It only makes it harder not impossible.

    Re: Get the Authenticator App

My account was hacked last night. I didn't have this app. I intend to get it now. Blizzard is in the process of rolling back my account or something.

I went through their list of common theft types and nothing seems to really apply to me.

    This is their list:
    Sharing Account Info
    Phishing Emails
    In-game Phishing
    Gold Sellers and Leveling Services
    Malicious Add-ons
    Malicious Websites

    I don't share info, ever.
I don't open e-mails. I've had my yahoo e-mail box for over 10 years now and 95% of it is "unread". I get a lot of spam but I never open stuff.
No in game phishing. I don't really talk to much, I just play.
Never bought gold or leveling services, no need, easy enough to level and get gold.
Never installed add-ons, didn't know there were any.
Only gaming related website I go to is this one.

So now I think blizzard is missing items from their list. I remember, 10 years ago I once watched someone hack yahoo to retrieve someone's e-mail password. They didn't need any kind of access to the owners pc or didn't need to install a key logger or anything like that, they didn't hack the owners computer, they hacked Yahoo. My question is, you think it's possible for them to hack battle.net?

Sorry to hear that you got hacked jmw. Hope Blizzard gets you sorted quickly.

Is it possible to hack Battle.net?

Of course it is. It is possible to "hack" any connected system. It's just a matter of difficulty, vulnerability exposure and time.

    Re: Get the Authenticator App

hmm, phone queue at Blizzard support is full. After some looking around, there does seem to be a wide spread problem with accounts getting hacked, and it almost seems to be caused by lack of security on Blizzard's part. Supposedly something happened during one of the updates. Also, playing in game with strangers enables them to get some kind of net ID from your account.

Well, I issued a support ticket to Blizzard and their website response was "look for your support ticket number in your e-mail" but I haven't received that e-mail yet. Been trying to get ahold of somebody to see if they are in fact going to perform a roll back or not. At this point, I think it would be silly for them to do so because I would probably lose more gear due to the rollback than what was stolen.

    Items stolen:
    legendary chest armor
    rare amulet
    both rare rings
    legendary mighty sword
132 blacksmith tomes (shoulda used those a long time ago)
a bunch of items in my inventory that might or might not have auctioned off
    and lastly, 17k in gold.

Everything is fairly easily replaceable, I never spent more than 70k in gold for one piece of gear, for the most part, i might spend 15k-20k for a single piece of gear, which can be made fairly quickly.

I wish I could get a hold of them to cancel the roll back...

If you didn't have all of the security measures set up, then this is really your fault. And, widespread? From what I've read, there only a few thousand accounts that have been hacked successfully (all without authenticators). Considering that going by the first week's sales figures, not including the D3 copies given to WoW players with the year long subscription, Blizzard sold 6 million copies...this isn't widespread.
enf-Jesus its been like 12 minutes and you're already worried about stats?! :-P

    Re: Get the Authenticator App

Well considering they aren't taking phone calls right now, and "a few thousand" is a large number, I'd say it's widespread. Unfortunately, I didn't know what an authenticator was. I learned of it when Blizzard showed me a link to increase security, and I'm sure the link would have been visible to me previously, but I have never had an account stolen or hacked into where the method wasn't inherently identifiable. I've played a lot of games; BF2, BC2, AION, Vanguard, Horizons, TF2, CSS, etc etc, and I never needed extra security aside from what the makers were already providing. After reading about the authenticator when clicking the security link on battle.net, I came to this section and recognized the word authenticator in the title of this post. I wouldn't have clicked this title otherwise because I don't have the time to click every single thread title in the forums. When I'm not working, I prefer to be playing, I do enough reading at work. To be perfectly honest, I think you are a little rude typing that first line the way you did.

Yes it is widespread... Hell, read the post i made earlier about having my debit card compromised merely hours after the diablo 3 purchase. (and don't give me that key logger bullshit)

    Blizzard is not perfect.

Just with TPG you have had 2 people out out of maybe 30 active d3 players in this community affected by something like this... with those numbers alone it's a 6% chance.. Seems pretty widespread to me..
