Re: Well that was a sort of fun month and a half
To be more specific, the endgame is replaying with a variety of characters and having it be fun because you're getting cool loot that makes playing each type of character fun. Interesting uniques, cool set items for a variety of levels, making runewords (or in TQ assembling artifacts). The loot system was more than just "grind for some cash and buy items with the same stats as the items you already have with higher numbers". That's what the replay value was in D2, that's what it was in Titan Quest, that's what D3 is missing.
For instance, in TQ you'll find random set items that are good for level 30 characters so as you roll a new character that is a hybrid between Rogue and something else, you'll have some cool crap to play around with at level 30 (giving bonus levels to certain skills you might not use otherwise, etc). As you play through with a lower level character you'll find lower level artifact recipes (or in D2, runes) and the pieces of relics/charms to build them, so that you can build divine artifacts later. It feels as though you are always possibly on the verge of finding something new and you're also getting a lot of variety in your playstyle playing with different characters.
In D3 it feels like you just rush through content, nuke the shit out of things and look for the same equipment but with higher stats on the auction house after you grind a few levels. Then you hit level 60 and you don't even do that... just keep getting more gold and saving to buy that perfect item on the AH.Last edited by Toad; 07-12-12 at 10:58 PM.

With the lower level characters being so overpowered rather than underpowered like in D2, finding gear for lower level characters is practically meaningless. This is what made D2 fun. Find something good for lower characters so they were more playable. Now, you equip higher level gear on a lower level characters, just means you get through a bit faster.
We were playing lower level characters last night and someone was talking about buying gear for them, I asked, "what's the point, you're not dying or being challenged now..."Last edited by RhysJD3; 07-13-12 at 01:20 PM.

I haven't played in a week now. Going back to fighting games to pass the boredom as I don't have a Diablo playgroup. Tired of bashing my face against the wall in act 3, most of the people I taught how to play at the LAN center play weird hours or have surpassed me. Unless I get a playgroup by the time Quakecon rolls around i'm probably going to set it down and pick up Ultimate MvC3 on my PS3 for a while.

Re: Well that was a sort of fun month and a half
I thought blizzard butchered the Diablo world with this game. To me, it was more about atmosphere and design along with the hunt.. and all this game had was a shitty hunt and comic book style interactions forced down our throats. The nerd side of myself read many of the books of Diablo over the years, I threw them in the trash last time I cleaned some things out. It was pretty evident that the designers of this game never even played much of Diablo2. Cause they never took over the best aspects of the fucking game. Just my opinion, sorry for the negative vibe and all!

I'm okay with the gameplay itself. I'm also okay with the story. Not thrilled by any means - they could have done better, but I can deal with whats there because I do like the new gameplay, and they can make the story better with xpacks. The gameplay fixes alot of the problems with the old style(clicking 90 times to allocate skills got incredibly old). I think class balance and variety could be a little better but Blizzard generally fixes those types of things over time.
My problem is that everything is too random. The thing with the end game being an epic hunt for loot is fine - D2 was like that. They just made loot far too random to get decent items. With D2 you knew that as long as you had a decent amount of MF you would eventually get the pieces you want... for the most part in D3 you're looking for totally random rares, and even in acts 2 and 3(haven't made it to 4...probably won't because I'm sick of farming to sell shit instead of getting gear for myself) the drops with decent enough stuff to sell(or use if you are really lucky) are just way too low, even with MF gear. I've got about 200% MF with my DH and I've got about 120 hours playing him...I've gotten exactly 1 drop I could use in inferno(ring - 6% atk spd, 4% crit and 25% crit dmg). Everything else has been sold, moved to my barb, or salvaged. Thats just completely wrong to me. There need to be more decent set items/legendaries, and MF needs to have a bigger role in making those things drop. As it is the goal of the game isn't to get gear to drop for you - the goal is to get something worth selling to drop for you. That takes the fun out of it for me.
To make the looting issues even worse, the random packs can just be downright fucking dumb. Unless you have some good gear anything "Fast" is going to rape pretty much anyone, especially if it has dmg reflect or shielding. Don't even get me started on invulnerable arcane enchanted. I feel the elite spawn skills are a little too random at times. I probably just have bad luck but in acts 2 and 3 I can't count how many times I run into fast shielded arcane enchanted mortar wallers. Any Wizard or DH can just kiss his/her ass goodbye with those packs(barring really good gear).
I'll probably pick up the expansion...I might boot it up again with the new patch(1.1), but I doubt I'll play at all until then.
