Over 2400 pilots are engaging in combat in the same battle in the same system in Eve Online. CFC vs. Everyone else.

They luckily introduced Time Dilation (TiDi) to help. However, unlike normal fights of this size that happen on reinforced server nodes (CCP knows 24 hours in advance and reinforces them), this one was not.

There is more to it too. In EVE the different solar systems/constellations/regions are on nodes. The most popular system, Jita, has a node all of its own. There were a few issues with this fight that made the lag even worse than normal. First, you have over 2,000 people in one system. Second, that system is a low security system, so there are rules that have to be calculated every time one ship shoots another. Third, the node was not "reinforced", meaning that since the fight was not planned the system was on its regular server, and not a beefed up server in preparation for the fight. All that together means that actions that normally took seconds took many minutes. Many people would lock a target, press the button to fire, then go make a sandwich, literally, and come back to find they were still in the same cycle of guns that normally takes 10 seconds.
However, CCP did do the best they could. They could not reinforce the system during live play, so they moved every other system on the same node off of it. this meant anyone in the area got kicked out of game briefly to move their solar system to a different box. It was fun to say "I was there", but in terms of the actual fight it wasn't really fun even by the time I arrived, which was fairly quickly.

That is still to be determined. The CFC, led by the Goons from the something awful forum holds about 1/3 of the map. The HBC, led by TEST from reddit, holds another 1/3, and the last 1/3 is in conflict. The reason for this battle is that the other 2/3. Of the universe hate the goons. This could be just for fun, or could be another ember in the fire of WW3, as the HBC and CFC used to be close alkies, but now don't much care for each other.
