Re: Lets talk game prices (And why they are too cheap).

Ehh, I'd rather a game be $60 over $100, even if I can resell it. I guess part of it is value (to me), and $60 is already hard to justify value but $100 would push it over for me. A lot I think has to do with the fact that other mediums for entertainment are cheaper then most video games already (a DVD is $5-20 dollars, streaming movies is cheap, Cable is probably 60+ dollars a month, over the air is free (with shitty stuff to watch granted), radio is the cost of a radio, outside is mostly free, etc.).

On second thought, maybe games being $100 would be good, be an excuse to catch up on movies, and maybe go outside more often.

$100? Keep in mind a large portion of the target audience is usually kids -> teenagers, even college students. $100 is outragious for a game. Would eliminate a large part of the market (not many parents are gonna drop $100 on a game for their children, i know mine would not have), and to make up for the lost part of the market games would have to be $2000 each (made up number, but you get my point). But even then i wouldnt feel as entitled to updates as I would with monthly fees.

That opens up a whole can of worms there. The more expensive the video games, the less obese our children. Keep in mind the post I made earlier about buying Mortal Kombat 2 back in 92. That game was $60 back then.. Equivalent to $90 today. My parents couldn't afford to buy me many games, so I played sports instead. Then again, parents need to observe their childrens behavior and ensure that they stay active.

Re: Lets talk game prices (And why they are too cheap).

This is why I'm glad we live in a world of Redbox and Humble Bundle. 2$ a day rental seems fair to me for a game I only plan on playing once, and that's only because of Redbox. If it weren't for Redbox(or if it were more) I'd have never played it at all. Same thing goes for HB. If I wasn't able to pay cheap for 4-6 games I know next to nothing about then I'd never play those games, and never consider buying any more.

I rarely pay full price for games anymore. Unless it's for a series I really enjoy like Borderlands and the Arkham series(soooooooo excited about Origins.) This brings me to a darker realization, that if it weren't for Redbox or HB that I would probably still be pirating games(you know it had to come up eventually.)

Re: Lets talk game prices (And why they are too cheap).

First, $100 for a game would likely see a significant drop in copies sold. I know I would purchase far fewer than I already do. Growing up I can count on one hand (and still have fingers left) the number of games my parents bought me. I had to buy them if I wanted them, and I had to work for the money to do so. $100 would have put them out of reach without question.

Second, laying obesity at the hands of video games is flimsy at best. There is correlation, in some cases, but it is far from a 1:1 linkage. Same with TV, etc etc.

Third, claiming pricier games will result in more sports...the two do not equate. There are plenty of very athletic and active ppl who play games and the inverse (and everything between) is also true. I played 4 sports year round and sometimes a fifth while still considering myself a gamer and playing the hell out of the handful of games I could afford to own (and maintaining high marks in AP courses).

Price will not compel a different "type" of activity (e.g. games --> outdoor sports). It will simply shift to another type of similar effort activity (i.e. someone who enjoys sedentary stuff and dislikes strenuous activities will continue to both enjoy and dislike, respectively, regardless of cost).

    imo, of course.

I know that man, I just wish that some of these kids would go outside instead of playing games all day.

It's all about balance. Too much of anything is bad news.

Even Hef needs to put on the robe every once in a while just to get the high-fives from the other senior citizen guys he hangs with. Blondes, brunettes, and gingers....Hef has the balance. Still. At 158 years old.

    Exhibit A:

The year was 1996. Command and Conquer Red Alert was just released. It was my sister's sweet 16 birthday party. My father had informed me that all my sister wanted for me was to lock myself into my bedroom for the entire day and duration of her party, only to come out to use the relieve my bodily waste.

In exchange for this, I had asked my father to buy me a copy of the new hit release, Command and Conquer: Red Alert. He agreed to my proposal, and also allowed me to purchase some snacks and supplies to get me through the long Saturday gaming festival I was about to endure. I purchased two jumbo bags of Ruffles Potato Chips, 2 containers of Deans French Onion Dip, and a 24 pack of Mountain Dew. They did not hear for me until Sunday afternoon...

I emerged from the depths of my room, smelling of french onions (whatever that means), with grease stains on my AST keyboard and mouse. I had drank all but 3 Mountain Dew cans and consumed 100% of the potato chips, as well as every the last bit of dip in the containers. He asked if I enjoyed myself. I informed him that I had beat the entire Allied campaign and was 5 missions into the Soviet campaign. He was not impressed and informed me that I had to go cut the grass.

While cutting the grass, pains came about my stomach. I stopped the mower and thought I needed a glass of water. While walking back to the house, I threw up... and boy did I throw up. Two bags of ruffles and 21 Mountain Dews came spewing out all over the grass. Immediately feeling better, I turned around, finished mowing the lawn, and went on with my life.

    Exhibit B:

The year was 1997. I had just purchased my first 3DFx Pure 3D2 Voodoo graphics card and was on a Quake II Deathmatching binge. I had been up for almost 2 days, absolutely blown away at how good a computer game could look. The lighting realism was second to none. Feeling hungry, I decided that it was a great idea to go to Walmart and purchase a BOX of Slim Jims. I grabbed my back pack, hopped on my bike, and headed to the store. I made my purchases (also getting some King Sized Snicker Bars and a few bottles of Mountain Dew), and headed home. I decided it was also a great idea to stop at 711 and get a huge Slurpee.

Getting home, I continued to death match. As I was rocket jumping, rail-gunning, head shotting, and simply dominating the epic world of Quake II death match, I was mowing down the Slim Jims, washing it all down with a Slurpee. It was glorious. After a few more hours I started to feel funny, so I decided it was best that I take a break. I laid down in bed, and the room started spinning... like I had had too much alcohol to drink.

After a while, it went away... so back to death matching. I was fine for about an hour, and decided to eat more Slim Jims, and this time wash it down with the Mountain Dew. I immediately regretted that decision, as I started to feel that familiar rumble in my stomach, just like the year before when I puked up Ruffles and Dean's French Onion dip all over my front yard.

I puked. And I puked some more. It was awful. I felt awful for like 6 hours. I tried my best to sleep it off, but I kept having to puke. I woke up at 2 in the morning, exhausted from continuously vomiting, dry heaving, and simply not having any rest... feeling better. I went into the kitchen to realize that my father had brought home some rice pudding. I sprinkled some cinnamon on it, brought it back to my room, and started the death matching all over again.

Anyways, I think there are some obvious links between video games and obesity. Especially when a game is so good that you go on junk food binges so extreme that you make yourself sick.
