I just started Dragon age Origins last week. I'm still early, only like 7 or so hours in, but I love it so far. I'm a huge fan of bioware and it's a shame I've waited this long to play it. My hope is that I finish it over the next few weeks so I can do inquisition after.
Is Dragon age 2 necessary to fill in the gaps before inquisition? I've heard 2 was terrible so my plan was to skip it entirely

2 isn't completely horrid. It'll introduce to Varic, who was actually one of the well done characters. Combat was fun.
There are mods for both. Only one I'd say to get for sure for DA:O would be the respec one.enf-Jesus its been like 12 minutes and you're already worried about stats?! :-P

Also, the DLC for both is available through the bioware social thingamjig. It's craptastic. The DA:O Ultimate or whatever it is should have everything. I'm not sure if that exists for DA:Kirkwall the Legend. Whether or not you decide to buy Bioware points to buy DLC that doesn't go on sale, there are free DLC you can get from the social bioware thing.

The only thing I've ever bought points for was mass effect...I'm ashamed, but it was necessary.
I bought every DLC for all three games (excluding the ones that were multiplayer or just added weapons). Bringing down the sky, pinnacle station, overlord, arrival, layer of the shadow broker, from ashes, leviathan, omega, and citadel. The only series I've ever been interested in enough to buy every DLC.
I've noticed so far in Dragon age Origins (I got the ultimate edition) that there's lots of extra stuff that I haven't done yet. Is all the DA:O dlc pretty good?

Uhhh...generally. I'd say go do the quest involving the golem control rod ASAP. Relatively easy and a something important spoiler.
Now, forewarning, the Orzammar questline...is FUCKING LONG. Be prepared to be in that place for a while. A really long while.
The Mage's Tower can be annoying (OK, it is annoying), but loads of free stat points that can really really help early on.
Respec mod is nice as you might notice that when you get a companion they are leveled to you, and that there are skills you and your companions will never use. You're a warrior and only use two-hand weapons? Ah shucks, you've got several points in Sword/Shield.
Also, archery...it's relatively weak in DA:O, but in the expansion that takes place after the conclusion of the main game, they're really really spectacular. Oh hai, Mark, you're standing on top of me, but you can't even hit me once to disrupt me shooting you with arrows to death.
With mages, you'll need to be careful, the most power spells hit AoE and WILL annihilate your own guys. Every one of your companions has tactics (more FFXII then Baldur's gate--more complex and adaptable). That being said, sometimes you need to shoot the fireball, but your tank has charged in to...tank. Shoot now and he's dead. That's why PAUSING is your friend like with more traditional CRPGs.
Oh, and auras that reserve mana/stamina behave differently between the first two games. In DA:O, it's a fixed amount, which, as you can guess, means you can stack a shit ton of them. In Kirkwall: Bounty Hounter, it's percentage based. Last I played though, it was still a little broken. I could activate an aura that might use 10% of my mana as a mage with only 5% available. Why would I reserve all of my mana? Blood magic is OP in A Tale of One Kirkwall especially with all of the items/weapons/armors that significantly boost the amount of "mana" you get from each point of HP spent.
DA:O--The Search for more money by Mel Brooks:
-making money is hard. Then you see items that are worth >100 gold (100 pieces of crap = 1 copper. 100 copper=1 silver. 100 silver = 1 gold).
-Most drops suck. (all equipment has tiers 1-7, higher is better). You'll make jack shit off of them, but it's better than nothing.
-You can use the console (you'll need to edit an XML file to enable it for Steam)
-Or you can make some high end mana potions by traveling back and forth repeatedly to get materials and then another trip to go sell with a max profit of 10 gold per trip if you sell the max amount. Very grindy. I only do this if I really really really have an excess of IRL time now.
You'll get some good drops regardless from some chests/rare monsters/mini-bosses/bosses/melt your face bosses.
DA:O--unless you're going healer yourself, Wynn OP. Well, she's not OP, but she's the only healer... ALSO, have Zevran and Wynn in your party together for some Xav-tier hijinks. Oghram and Zevran are the bee's knees for funny dialogue. Morrigan is great at times, but she can be a Debbie Downer with that sharp wit.
Blood dragon armor in DA:O rules. It is teh suck in Kirkwall the search for hopefully more dungeon maps.
Arcane mages are awesome, but it'll take time to unlock that. (magic substitutes for strength requirements). Think mage in full plate armor with good melee damage and good spell damage and auras. I hear you unlock it in a forest somewhere.
If you use the dog, find the landmarks and have it take a piss. It's not too useful though at least compared to Ms. Rocky.enf-Jesus its been like 12 minutes and you're already worried about stats?! :-P

Re: Dragon Age Inquisition
I liked dragon age 2 I dono why it got such a bad rap. Yes the exploration portion isn't very good. I thought the story was interesting with the mages vs everyone else. I also loved the characters and generally wanted to know more about them all. Combat was fun and overall it felt like time well spent. I played through it multiple times. I'm not huge single player fan and that one the few games I enjoyed enough to play through. Plus replay the game all over again to make different choices. It should be cheap as dirt now and I'd highly recommend the game based on cost of admission.

Well, this game, rush master archer. Stack archery stances. Master archer negates most of the downsides other than stamina.
