Stomping Land Scam
The Stomping Land's dinosaur modeler gives up, moves to a new game - PC Gamer
Crash and burn. Looks like the project head fell off the face of the Earth. Game's been pulled from Steam again and the website and facebook pages are gone.
I never picked it up though. Too bad looked awesome.
This "alpha release" trend isn't where I would like to see the gaming industry heading. Granted I love 7D2D and did love the old Rust, but I think I just got lucky with those two.Dispatch the DooM

I've pretty much stopped buying video games because this is the state of the video game industry. Hardline, Evolve, H1Z1, and others all look like great games that a couple years ago I would have picked up immediately. Now my life is different than back then in terms of time and money, but im also completely over buying games when they are first released. If they ARE any good then I will find out from videos and friends, if they aren't I will suffice by enjoying watching people play the games on youtube.
Early access games are the biggest scam in video game history.

Hardline is just not my cup of tea.
I watched an angry Joe review on Evolve and it seems to be a mega fail unless you have a group of friends that want to be nothing in life but Evolve pros.
H1Z1 was very difficult to not buy at release. Its really the kind of game I'm into these days. But I just couldn't help but remember Aliens Colonial Marines and Rust fizzling out. I might get into H1Z1 when its F2P.Dispatch the DooM

Not all early access games are horrible, but you do have to be careful. I bought Verdun during a Christmas sale for $5, and it's fantastic. Hard, but good. They update the game constantly, and the dev team is only three guys.

Re: Stomping Land Scam
This is a hard subject. Obviously there is a certain amount of trust involved when contributing to these games whether you buy at launch or pay for early access. There are failures like the stomping land but then there are huge success stories like Star Citizen, minecraft, rust, and kerbal space program. I would have to say that there are as many successful games out there that were crowd funded or alpha released as there are failures. In the end place your money on the safest bet possible and if you get burned tough shit. I remember buying many games before all this DLC and alpha release crowd fund crap came about that were just complete crap so you can't really avoid it.

My complaint is that it seems gaming developers, whether they be independent or from a big company, saw how gullible consumers were to the alpha/beta process and took advantage of it. Now of course this isnt the case for EVERY single game, but there is no doubt some developers said to themselves, "Let's get the most money out of this as possible and then not follow through with what we promised." Whether they decided this on purpose or got to the point when they figured out what they promised wasn't as easy as they thought. (DayZ)
Like I said I know this isnt the case with every early access game, but my own experiences have ruined it for everyone. I want a finished product from now on, unless its some dirt cheap indie game that is inventing something new I've never seen before.

Part of me loves that you can your hands on a game wicked early. If you can accept its a work in progress. Rust and 7D2D gave me close to 600 hours of game time Just about as much as I got out of Skyrim and BF4. But I hate the way Rust has gone and never play it anymore.

Re: Stomping Land Scam
Yeah, and it pisses me off when fan-boi-ism, popularity, and market hype win. Again. And again. But it's not like that's a new thing. Pre-sale, paid alphas, and early access are just the latest iteration.
I have some sympathy for the independents. Engaging early interest may have become a necessary part of the process for outsiders and indie startups.
I'm not sure what you meant there, but part of me doesn't care. That quote is solid gold.
