It depends on what you want. If you already own HL2 and/or don't care for single player games, just buy TF2. If you want portals as well, you might as well grab the orange box.

Played HL 1, liked it.. never did HL2 or later...

I Got the Orange box... only for TF2....

Im 5 hours into HL2 and loving it...
Got killed ~423 times so far in TF2..and loving it...
Portal freaks me out.... Loving it..

Yes worth it...

Absolutely -
Portals - not done yet, but so far one of the most unique enjoyable experiences I have had in a single player game.
Episode 2 - just started it, maybe 1:30 worth, already had one of the most 'damn that was fun' moments in a single player game. Highly enjoyable.
TF2 - Its like playing a loony-toons cartoon, funny, fun, and plenty of explosions! what more needs to be said

If your like War and never played HL2, your in for a REAL treat.

Even if you have HL2 and EP1, if you care anything for singleplayer games the orange box is worth it. If you don't have one or both of those... The value is obscene.

i don't know about obscene value, valve will make some other "enticing" add-ons to make their money trust me.

How is it not obscene if you don't have HL2+EP1 and you like single player games? The best single-player game on the PC+its two expansions+A short and awesome game (portal)+a game that TTP has a server for all for $50=awesome.

Even already owning HL2 I consider it a hell of a value. I'd gladly pay fulll price for Portal and TF2 individually. That would have cost me $5 more than Orange Box did since I preordered, and without Episode 1 & 2.
