i hate jb first off. and second we discussed this JB i never saw the offer for vassel you must have sent it after i closed out the window or i mis-read because i remember you asking for my 2 techs for 3 of yours, none too enticing but i didn't see the vassel part. Plus i was quick on the turn down since i asked for 6 for one of them the turn before

Re: Jan: Civ4 Aftermath
So now that we have had that match...
I think next time maybe more starting funds would help buy more techs. I know I made 3 colonies before time was out, and I saw Loki had at least 1. Maybe with a bit more starting funds we could buy enough techs that within 5 hours we could really start settling the new world...unless you go to war and spend your whole game making units and fighting/defending.
I am going to play some games with 2000+ points and see how fast they go

My thoughts for the next match, feel free to critique.
1. I like the size of the map, but would prefer it if we were not all on the same land mass. For players like Mako and Rob this stuck them right in the middle, and made them easy targets. I feel we had enough land to work with to spread out, but if it was spread across 2-3 smaller continents it would be more fun, and require more use of aquatic war.
2. 6 hours next time. If we start on time, check for updates the day before you slackers, and end at the same time that gives us an extra hour to get more advanced.
3. Faster turn timer. I felt like some of the time turns just dragged out. I automate a lot, so maybe I am just dumber than others, and don't have as much to do, but especially towards the end it got stale. Faster turn timer would get us more advanced techs near the end.
4. Maybe add 2-3 AI characters. I enjoy war, but not so much versus some of my fellow players. If there were some AI to battle as well it might be more interesting.
5. Maybe more start money. At the end we were just starting to get to the fun stuff. More money, along with the other time related suggestions, might get us some cool stuff like planes, tanks, helos, etc.

Re: Jan: Civ4 Aftermath
Good points Civil,
A few thoughts:
The times the turn timer dragged out were likely people having war. When you have tons of units activated, moving them around can take awhile. Cutting someone off in the middle of a strategic set of deployments could be disasterous for them. Also, when doing diplomacy with several different players time can drag on, I got cut off doing diplomacy a few times because the turn timer clicked while I was making deals. But on the other hand, it did feel very dragged out sometimes when I had little to do that turn.
The "terra" game type puts everyone on the same land mass. Thats why it is a race to the new world (where there are only barbarians). In the first match (not a terra map) we used separate landmasses and one problem that arose was people getting stuck without a religion as the religions developed elsewhere and they never got any until people were seafaring. I do agree that getting pinned down sucks, however. Another solution could be to increase to the huge map size. But that makes transportation, especially seafaring, even harder. The terra map is already larger than normal, and when you make a huge one, it gets especially challenging to move around in a timely fashion.
AI characters can be fun as long as we pick the right ones; we saw what happened in that one match where we all got clobbered by the AI. Also, AI will reduce the amount of room even further.
There is a setting that makes an earth like configuration but players spawn on all landmasses. Perhaps we could do that one next time. Althought it will no longer be a race to the new world. But there would be ample room for the players and AIs.
I am fine with a 6 hour match; hell, Jb and I have been discussing "all day" games.
Good points, Civ, lets figure out now how the next match should go.

Re: Jan: Civ4 Aftermath
I have decided that the runner-up, JB, will be awarded the prize, he was ahead most of the game and even though it was close at the very end, the gap was sealed in a rather unfair manner. Also, as the award giver, it seems to be in poor form to award it to myself, so I think that in the future, should I win, the runner up will recieve the award (if I am the award giver).
JB, what server do you want your 3 months on?
