Thread: Finally! Mechwarrior 4 Mercenaries cleared for free distribution!

:3 White is a sad panda now...I've always wanted to play a Mechwarrior game that's not just a demo. Hopefully, they'll fix things soon.

Their ISP's router melted this morning under the load. Damned silly ISP is now trying to demand $2,000 to replace it before getting their site back. (Info from senior Mektek bod care of the Mechwarrior Leagues forums)
Needless to say that until this dispute between Mektek and the ISP is resolved, it will be down... I mean, the ISP has known this was coming for nearly a year, and NOW they work out their router can't cope with this level of demand *sigh*
I'm a regular MW4 player, and was seriously looking forwards to this.

Ok, the idea is: you download MTX, get the 1.8GB initial install either thru MTX or your favorite torrent client, then install with MTX, then add the 2 patches that MTX should detect and automagically fetch and install for you. Then play.
Sadly, with melted servers, this isn't working quite right currently, please be patient.
The CD2 problem is a known bug, and the latest patch fixes that, but until the servers are back, it won't install to fix the bug.

And the real trouble with this is the year that MS's lawyers took to OK the free release, during which time Mektek got bored and released the 3.1 version on their own (minus the bit that made it free) and another bug-fix patch on top. Now there has to be a second patch installed to make it free again (and a few more bug-fixes too). With me so far? The problem is that the installer needs to talk to mektek.net to work right, and with their servers out, that means it won't work.

Info on Battletech.com implies the mekmatch game servers are back up, but the melted web-server is still out.

Did you have it downloaded before the patch came out? Mine did that and I just un then reinstalled everything and it worked.

If not it is probably because everyone is jumping on it again like they did the first time...

Well, it's downloading for me (just got home a little while ago), but it isn't giving progress. Meh, as long as it is actually downloading it.

If this doesn't prove that there needs to be a new Mechwarrior, nothing does....

Data is still coming but from our records we had 100,000+ unique visitors last night and approximately 10,000 downloads happening via torrent when our server infrastructure went down (software/hardware). In part to no blame on our awesome host, we had no idea, that this many people want MW4. I suppose free really is a powerful word. Given the poor reaction to our MTX client, in its defense, it is early beta, very dependent on web access to MekTek. Some of this has changed. The team has been very hard at work around the clock on a new build which has an offline mode and ability to apply *.mtx patches whether MekTek is online/offline/gone. For those trying to get around MTX and unpacking MTX files manually, we do caution, this will cause you grief because you can not install patches this way unless you hack support back into MTX for your game. One of the main reasons we released MTX was because this is such an old game and we have no way to get people updated should updates occur and they are planned. So yea, this is a growing pain, though an awesome one, we must admit!
