    Minecraft

Minecraft is an FPS that lets you put down (or destroy) different building blocks to make whatever structures you can think of. At some point it will have a more robust survival mode (which you can test out in "single player survival" that gives you a set amount of blocks to use in the daytime, in order to protect yourself from the undead once nighttime comes.

It's still in alpha, but has a functional interface that will load in a web browser. Most servers are collaborative building, although there are a bunch of mods that people have loaded on their servers. It's free to play.

This server created a city. It's protected in that you have to register with them to be able to build anything outside of the "guest zone" and they can revert to backups if needed.

This server created a model of the world.

I played on another server where everyone started as a human and after 30 seconds one person turned into a zombie and respawned. When the zombie touched someone they'd turn into a zombie too. The humans could build structures to protect themselves, and the zombies could tear them down. I followed someone into a series of tunnels that we created and we stayed alive for awhile by making a maze with a lot of false walls, but were eventually found out and eaten.

It's pretty neat, and you can access it from wherever in a web browser.

    Re: Minecraft

One set of vids that got a few of us hooked was a single player tutorial by a youtuber...

    A tutorial for survival mode.

The website uses paypal as of now for the current version. Right now if you buy the alpha version you get all future updates as well as the game being half the end retail price ( about 10 euros which is usually around 13-14 bucks US).

    Minecraft

The creator goes by the moniker 'Notch' and has a blog in which he announces work and updates. To date he has made millions on this indie title and is turning that money around into his own small studio.
    The Word of Notch

Worth a shot for the price if you like sandbox style games that can be played a variety of ways.
