Skyrim
I never played Arena but Daggerfall, Morrowind and Oblivion were gold. I always thought Morrowind was a very sadly under rated game. Then Oblivion hit the mainstream and the rest is history. Mainstream has it's downsides for sure but the upside is definitely going to be a larger budget and more polish.
Although the downside is of course that they now know it's popular and will charge what they want, distribute how they want, leave portions omitted for future DLC and in general piss all over the die hards. In either case I'm still purchasing it and I know it will be worth the money to get the base package.

Re: Skyrim
The upswing to the popularity is that no matter how many ways the game falls short, or even if it happens to downright suck, it WILL have a giant modding community that WILL buy it on principle and WILL mod it into something beautiful. Because Bethesda already said Skyrim's coming with mod tools, I don't see a lot of ways this game can fail in the long-term. Since it's on a new engine which is supposed to correct many of Gamebryo's flaws, it may even be a very good game in its own right when it comes out.
Given Bethesda's tendency to have truckloads of hilarious bugs in their games on release, I expect it'll be fairly rocky at launch, but it'll be hard for it to do poorly on PC once a year or two have passed and given the community enough time to get some good mods/unofficial patches out.

Re: Skyrim
Maybe it was just me and the people I talk to, but: Morrowind was more popular than Oblivion was, we played it more overall and it felt like a better game.
People were outcrying in Oblivion when they released horse armour right out of the gate......-- Intentionally Left Blank --
