Age of Conan Goes Free 2 Play today
I hear that Conan went free to play today.
Not sure about the expansion, but it (Rise of the Godslayer) is on sale at Steam for $7.49

Its a new business model. Instead of offering the whole game at one price, they can offer the core game and beginning quests and dungeons for free, but once your hooked, charge for the raids and any other awesome content. You'll only be able to progress just so far then you will have to pay to access the game content you need to keep leveling. So yeah, i think that is exactly what they are doing.

Probably, depends on the game. AO has done it's F2P for a long time, originally (and still is) put into place to boost the player count. WoW is replacing the 14-day trial with their F2P version to get players sucked into the lore and hopefully become paying members. So far, in my limited experience, it is either to get players hooked on the game or to boost numbers (likely for keeping subscribers)

Re: Age of Conan Goes Free 2 Play today
They're starting to figure out that WoW is the best MMO on the block, and if a player can't afford two monthly subscriptions or is not interested in multiple monthly subscriptions (that's nearly everyone), they'll never make a profit by trying to compete directly.
By going F2P, they won't lose as much to WoW because it's no longer in direct competition with WoW.
