Thoughts on gaming hardware and the games I play

Rate this Entry
So last week, I was thinking about upgrading my aging gaming rig. I am (still) running a Socket 939 Opteron on an Nforce 4 Motherboard. 2 GB of RAM and a Geforce 8800GTS-512 round out the package. This computer is dedicated to gaming and no non-gaming apps are installed. I have had this basic setup for quite almost 4 years. I have upgraded only the video card from its original Geforce GT 7800 and I had to replace the PSU once. I play my games on a 22'' Samsug that has a maximum resolution of 1680x1050. Until very recently, I could play any game I wanted at max details and resolution with no framerate problems. But now it seems that I will need to upgrade soon. I am sad to see this setup go. But at least I should be able to replace the guts fairly cheaply. The Euro is down vs the Dollar and the German equivalent of Fry's accepts the VAT. I built a new server for the house with parts from there for under $400 so I figure about $800 to $900 should do nicely.

I feel ya in the upgrade....no matter how "future proof" you try to make your system....an upgrade will be inevitable within 3-4 years.
