Bobby Kotick muses about a Call of Duty MMO
by Justin OlivettiJun 22nd 2010 (2 hours ago)
Activision Blizzard owns one of the most profitable gaming franchises in the world with Call of Duty, and Bobby Kotick knows it. In a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal, Kotick was open about his ambitions with the series, saying that he wishes that they would create an online subscriber version. It's not a new sentiment from Kotick, as he's been saying as such for years, although it certainly is pretty straight-forward.
Kotick threw a few logs onto the fire of speculation: "I would have Call of Duty be an online subscription service tomorrow. I think our audiences are clamouring for it. If you look at what they're playing on Xbox Live today, we've had 1.7 billion hours of multiplayer play on Live. I think we could do a lot more to really satisfy the interests of the customers. I think we could create so many things, and make the game even more fun to play."
No stranger to controversial statements, it's hard to tell if Activision Blizzard's CEO was just shooting the breeze or hinting at an upcoming title from the publisher. In any case, a Call of Duty MMO would be major news indeed if it happened, so we'll be sure to keep our eyes on Activision -- and our ears on Kotick for any possible confirmation.

Re: Call of Duty MMO possible?
Sorry but this guy is a leech on the gaming industry. I have boycotted all Activision games because of him.
=====
Bobby my friend, it takes fuck all to 'satisfy' the two digit IQs you call your customers, so be blunt and say you're going to milk these morons for all their allowance and welfare cheques are worth.
Kotick garners a lot of hate from people that do not understand that the more money the mental thirteen year olds that enjoy Modern Warfare 2 spend on his products, the fewer of them can afford paying for games I enjoy playing.
The man is a fucking genius.
=====
kotick or rather co-dick? he's an asshole or manager or banker or whatever you call the idiots of the nation these days.
=====
"I would have Call of Duty be an online subscription service tomorrow."
Coming from Kotick, I totally believe that--not that he'd give us an incredibly deep and well-supported MMO but that he'd simply slap a subscription fee onto the games people are already playing (without adding anything to them). Knowing that greedy blight on gaming, he'd probably make it a $25/month fee, too ... with microtransactions: pay extra everytime you want to use a certain perk or kill streak reward.
^--Don't give him any ideas lol you might have to pay per bullet!
=====
This is just another marketing spin-a-thon.
Do the Math.
Game £50 a (now) annual purchase.
MMO Sub £10-15 per month.
So Kotick is saying you want to pay 2-3 the price of the game to play on a subscription basis. Will they give you 2 -3 games worth of content per year?
NO.
Another blatant grab for your wallet by a shrewd businessman. I hate him with a passion but respect his business accumen.
DO NOT FALL FOR IT!
=====
DIAF Kotick. We know you have no interest in us having "fun".
=====
The problem is it wont be an MMO. It will be the same game with a subscription attached.
=====
Kotick's not talking about making an MMO.
He's talking about charging a subscription to play CoD online.
=====
Good to see that Kotick's got the support of those familiar with MMOs. I'll stick to Call of Duty 4.Last edited by WaterDumple; 06-22-10 at 01:03 PM.
