Torchlight MMO to be featured in PC Gamer
From Massively.com
Runic Games and Torchlight designer Travis Baldree open up about their Torchlight MMORPG in the new issue of PC Gamer that hits newsstands this week. The hit single-player game will serve as inspiration for a solo-able massively multiplayer title.
"Our vision is to have an MMO that plays as close to single player as we can get it. It will have the same focus on relatively fast action: carving your way through hordes of monsters with a large number of hugely devastating skills. The game has to be solo-able, but players will have to have skills that make them useful in a party and make them work together," Baldree says.
The title will also feature a microtransaction payment model, which, ironically enough, its creator despises. "I will never, ever buy a microtransaction item," Baldtree states. "I'm that kind of player. And the game has to be enjoyable for me, too. We don't want our monetisation stuff to offer ways to skip the game because the game is boring."

I haven't subscribed to any magazines in a while, but I might have to buy this issue or breeze through at one of the stores if I can just to read the article. Loved game and I'm curious to see what will change to make it an MMO while still trying to maintain those SP elements and well it'll all pan out for them.

Everyone's trying to get into the mumorpurger business these days. Some people need to realize that making a game an MMO is not always a smart move for the game... or for the business.
Torchlight was a pretty meh RPG to me (the fact that you had to click everything was ridiculous), and an MMO in and of itself is designed to be a multiplayer game... not a single player game.

Torchlight was planned to have a MMO element to it from the start. Runic said something to the effect of "expect news on a FREE MMO Torchlight within 18 months of Torchlight's release."
And now they're delivering.
And I am kind of excited to see what they have planned.

Torchlight was an unabashed Diablo clone, complete with utterly outdated click-to-do-everything gameplay. You can plagiarize Diablo (again) while still making a few convenient gameplay alterations. Like letting us click a target once to attack it and use WASD to move instead of clicking everywhere.
Progress is not a bad thing.

I just don't see this pulling any large numbers of gamers. The SP story was weak to begin with, given that the point of the game was dungeon crawling. If there isn't any PVP, I don't see why people would play the game over something like Diablo 2, which has a built in multiplayer. MMOs with no story suck donkey balls. There's got to be something to keep you in the game. Games like Eve have huge player driven wars that rage across a galaxy. WoW has decent story and PVP. Those games do well because of it. Imagine if you would play the games without those aspects.

It can't really be plagiarizing if they have the same developers that worked on Diablo.
Plus they tried that with Hellgate London when they were a part of Flagship Studios and look how well that turned out for them. I loved the game, but they changes they made I guess were a little too different and didn't have much longevity.
