Re: Faith in humanity levels dropping
I slightly disagree...I think people who use the word arenīt ignorant...I would buy that if some kid in the Nambikwara tribe of Brazil said "n**gger" ...then Iīd agree that that kid is probably ignorant and doesnīt really know the history of the word and how hurtful it is to black people....
But a kid in the States....cīmon...if a kid in the States uses that word then heīs either extremely stupid or racist...even though being racist is extremely stupid.

Re: Faith in humanity levels dropping
DG - Guyver asked what kinds of white (or other ethnicity not black) people would use that word in some way other than as an insult. I submitted a picture of a white person who, no doubt, would use that word without trying to be insulting about it (in fact people like him would use that word in the exact same way, so they think, that a black person would use that word). It is still ignorant.
And I didn't "quote" you as saying that the usage of the word is kosher. However, you are arguing that the usage of the word is perfectly fine/acceptable for different people or in different locations. But, and into the philosophy we go, that's basically claiming that ethics/morality aren't universal and that they are cultural or defined by ones culture. To take that to the extreme of the argument that is the equivalent of stating "It's perfectly acceptable for person A to kill people he disagrees with because that's his culture." When in reality "It's never acceptable for person A to kill someone just because he disagrees with them."
You are arguing that it's ok for blacks, or others who have grown up in "big downtown areas" or urban areas or depressed areas, to use that word regardless. Others are saying that it's ignorant to use the word no matter what the case. Cast as a logical statement, you are in the position of arguing that "It's ok for person A to kill people he disagrees with just because he grew up thinking it was ok."
That's a pretty untenable position to argue and the spinning and "refactoring" shows that quite clearly.

Re: Faith in humanity levels dropping
Believe it or not there are white people that live in those areas with black people that would use the word in a noninsulting manner that dont look like that. Altho i did think the pic was funny. In your opinion it would be ignorant but at the same time its not your culture. As such it makes perfect sense you feel that way.
Ethics and morality aren't universal. They are both learned items while growing up. You are not born with them.

Re: Faith in humanity levels dropping
i think what dg meant was you could be ignorant in a certain subject or area without being a ignorant person.if being ignorant of one thing is the criteria of being ignorant then we all are.Im happy we live in a day and age where it can even be conceived that racism is dead because it will not go away anytime soon but nice that some people dont see it i suppose thats progress.noone would have the balls to claim that years ago or at least thats how i see it.there are alot of words people use to describe others but really i dont think we should describe one another as a action/disposition/emotion/beleif because these things constantly evolve. i have never met a brave person or a cowardly person i have never met a ignorant person or a jealous person ive met people who tend to be more or less of any of these things but to me we are all just people.live and let live.the only thing that shouldnt be tolerated is intolerance. Re: Faith in humanity levels dropping
Whether you want to believe it on not, it would still be insulting to the vast majority. It's very hard (if not impossible) for a white person to use the word without it being it being insulting....or taken as such. To think otherwise, is pure foolishness.
Any white person, walking up to a black person saying, "Sup, nigger?"....is going to get a WTF look, at the very least...or an ass beating at worse.

Re: Faith in humanity levels dropping
We should be happy that the word itself is migrating to a place where it can used in a sense that isnt insulting. They already knew what i was talking about on being ignorant to how people grew up but it takes away from their arguement that things are what they are. You dont have to like it and you can be ignorant of how it is that way but the last thing someone should do is call someone ignorant just because someone is diffierent or grew up differenty then they did.
All that tells me is we have some people around here that do discriminate and hate just to hate. Your no better then those people that grew up differently then you did. The only difference is your morals and ethics to theirs. Thats not to mention the level of intolerance going on toward blacks by some. They are the ones that use the word most frequently after all.Last edited by deathgodusmc; 01-20-12 at 12:33 AM.
