which included the Chargers, Diamondbacks, Falcons, Raptors, Broncos, Bears and Cavaliers.
sorry, the amount of schools that seem to take their mascots because there is a professional/college team has it (or it sounds cool), going as far as to use the professional/college teams logo really grates at me. Surely there was something much better they could of used to begin with?
My highschool was the Chargers but at least it was for a good reason, instead of what was likely "Der is teh NFL team named teh chargers, it'd be coolz!!!" (the school I went to was named after James H. McClintock who was the captain of the Rough Riders Troop B).

Its in Phoenix area so no, but McClintock did a TON of stuff for the state after his service (thus why named after him and used Chargers). Hell our logo, colors, and mascot had nothing to do with the popular chargers (logo probably looked more Virgina esq, colors blue and red, and mascot was a horse).
With the names I came up with a few that fit the area: Felons (large prison in the town), Beavers (has to do with the Utes), Bears, Gulls (state bird). Probably could find a few other if I took a bit more time but meh, think those fit the area better then the Falcons, Chargers, Raptors, Diamondbacks or Broncos.

Oh please. Like high school athletes aren't capable of turning any mascot name into a dick joke.
I almost told this story a week ago in the Sports Talk section:
In grad school, me and 2 other guys lived in a surprisingly nice place. It became the social nexus for our various friends. Parties, barbeques, and watching The Game (whichever one was on).
One Sunday, late in the morning, about 5 of us were watching sports news in our living room. We were hosting a party that afternoon, and people were already dropping by to have coffee and relax - standard pre-game warmup for what we were expecting to be an 8 hour stint of beer spillin', meat grillin', and cold chillin'.
In walked Melissa. Doctoral student in philosophy of religion, and film. Scary smart, as real as they come, and a hell of a lot of fun. She paused to look at the five of us layed out on couches and chairs watching ESPN and was just about to say something when the anchor switched to the next story, "And this afternoon the Crimson Tide face the..."
... and she shrieked in laughter. "OH MY CHRIST! There's REALLY a team called the Crimson Tide? HAHAHHAHAhahhaha NO FUCKING WAY. I thought it was a joke. It's REAL?... AHAHAHAHhaha..." and that went on for some time. For the rest of the day she kept bursting out in laughter and telling the women there all about it. For the next 6 months it was even-odds that if anyone mentioned sports around her she'd start laughing.
I have to admit, she had a point. Half the men there didn't even know what she thought was so funny. It took some of us hours.
So as long as Alabama has a team named "The Bloody Menstrual Flow", I'm not going to worry about the possibility that someone might take the name "Cougar" the wrong way.
Cheers,
Æ
