Really? Middle-aged women who earned that title might be offended that others think all middle-aged women are subject to that title.

Also, weird. Even if you can stretch your mind far enough to believe that this name might occasionally refer to something other than a wild mountain cat, who thinks that middle aged women are offended at having their sexuality promoted? "Cougars" isn't a problem. Calling the team the "Old Hags" is a problem.

I get the feeling some administrator just really wanted some other name, and used this as an excuse.

It's a silly world.

More significantly, why would the board even offer "Cougars" as a potential mascot choice if it wasn't prepared to accept it? That lack of logic is positively baffling.
