Re: Funny controversial things
Maybe so.
Television is good at a few things, but it's really pretty terrible at lots of things. I think that history will look back at us and be puzzled that we used TV to do things for which TV itself is uniquely unsuited, and they will not understand why we were so surprised to get such predictably bad results.
I'm all for having TV shows be less shitty, but I think that the people who need help "getting it" aren't going to get it from TV no matter what sort of shows are on. They need to get it from somewhere else.
Highly Recommended:
"Amusing Ourselves to Death: Public Discourse in the Age of Show Business" (1985), by Neil Postman.
The summary on Wikipedia isn't terrible.
Any time I am a party to a discussion of media, I notice that (in my mind) the participants quickly divide themselves into those who are acquainted with the ideas in that book, and those who are not.

Excellent points down the line. And you're correct that they'd likely miss it regardless of what content is assaulting their various lobes and cortices.
As for the book, I've not read it but I can say (judging from the cover title - I know I know shameful) that I think I know where that "message" is going and tentatively agree its premises already.
And yes - there is a great divide there, as in many other facets of life (most of them being equally silly and or pointless).
