Re: Funny controversial things
I was responding to the perhaps-funny and definitely-controversial post here:
... but decided that this was a better thread for it.
Some time in the past, a few friends and I were talking about the whole idea of "too soon." In an attempt to get to the core of how we humans keep entangling humor and tragedy, I started trying to make jokes where the punch-line was "too soon."
So, in this case, the joke might go:
"Two bombs walk into a Boston pub. One of them explodes. The second one says, "too soon?"
[there are obvious ways to make that a better joke, but I'm not trying to be inappropriate just now :) ]
It's sort of like an Aristocrats style joke, except instead of a punch-line that works via outrageous contrast it's a punch-line that folds the joke back on the very transgressions being committed. The joke describes something awful, and telling the joke is awful. The punch-line that works inside the joke also works to describe the joke. Humour + Meta-humour.
In any case, our evening of thoughtful introspection on the human condition quickly turned into a free for all of trying to one-up each other in terms of being both funny and horrible. We did too good a job, and some of the jokes were legitimately cringe-larious, but in the cold light of morning I was pretty uncomfortable recalling some of what was said and admitting that some of it had been said by me.
Cheers,
