The majority of FDR's new deal went into infrastructure, which also lead to government paid jobs, even if they weren't technically government employees. His theory was that with the tax rates every dollar he paid someone to build a highway he got 75 cents back in the form of some tax or another. Our current debt is going to car companies and banks who are primarily sitting on it waiting for the storm to pass, or covering for their own massive fuck ups. A little different if you ask me.

Actually the increase in debt from TARP is rather small. Wars and lower taxes, I would think made a much bigger dent.


And some of that TARP money will come back, the cost of war and lost taxes won't.

Hold on. We are praising Obama for getting out of wars, but blaming wars for the massive increase in debt during his term. How can it be both?

FRD increased over 800% over 3 terms and within his first term the increase was 350%



Remember that FDR is widely considered the US's best president.

He's also widely considered as one of the worst....economically speaking. Social Security and the Welfare system were both his babies (The Raw Deal), and both are dragging us down today. FDR left a shit in the bed that is being smelled ~70 years later.

*Disclaimer- FDR was ONE of the best Presidents we have had. His leadership kept our country together during one of the most trying times in our history.

B/c he didn't initiate the Iraq War or the tax cuts.

But if he was truly shutting down the wars then wouldn't the debt from war be less than the debt from war for Bush? Not saying it would be zero, but should be less.

There was still a sizable debt incurred that affected the debt increase under Obama. Which is how this subject came up.
