Simply put, a lot of people got into science because of things like Star Trek, the Space Program, etc. Now though, what is there to inspire kids to get into science, to become engineers, doctors?

To answer your question well star wars and star trek are still very good reasons. We still haven't scratched the surface.

DS9 wasn't bad, and Voyager was entertaining (7/9 and Janeway were hotties, too). However, TNG was the last show to try to offer attempts at innovative technologies like the original Star Trek did.

I would Agree with the OP. Until the war with Iran starts we'll just have to look to Politicians to inspire us.
