Ouch.....I have 2500 sq. ft., in ground swimming pool, and .9 acres that only cost me $222,000 in 2003. It's assessed at $264,00 now, with a 6% reduction on my last assessment, due the recession. I don't know how I could afford the prices you are talking about up there ^.

Move to TX. Fairly stable job market, and you can get a 2k sqft house for 200k or less in many areas.

Yeah. Pay averages a bit higher here, but not enough to make up the difference.

While the BBQ sounds nice, I need a source of cheap, fresh lobster and clams to be able to function.

Bummer - tough to get down here. Though the crawfish next door (LA) is the best on the planet.

One of the houses that we looked at, but aren't pursuing, was a 4500 sq ft 5/3.5 3 car detached garage.....for $184k. It was older than we were looking for and further from the medical center than we wanted to be, but other than that was a very nice home.

If you don't mind driving to work, you can live 20 minutes from Boston in a large house for 300-400k, but my wife and I both work downtown, so we want to live right on the subway.

hehe, 20-30 minutes in Houston is normal and considered relatively close.
