What about those who couldn't afford the insurance that they needed when they were younger until they were able to get a good enough job? Not everyone needs medical insurance, but quite a few do.

03-28-12, 11:08 PM #7Wait, so people with serious medical problems should pay more than people who never get meds or go to the doctor? Next you will tell me that people with more tickets and accidents should have to pay more for car insurance. This is just crazy talk.

Re: Fuck him
Dental insurance typically requires you to be on the plan for a year before having major work done. I think health insurance should be like that, cover reg. doctor visits and such at first and after a year or two then cover pre-existing conditions. I had my own health insurance when I was 19. I went a few years in my early twenties without insurance. I paid for everything out of pocket. I could have developed cancer, had a friend and coworker that got cancer and fortunately had just got married and added to his wifes policy. Life is a gamble.
I agree our insurance system is fucked up. I can go to the doctor and tell them I want to pay cash on the spot and I get one rate. I use insurance and they charge me a co-pay, then bill my insurance double or triple what I paid when I used cash. The insurance says no we will only pay half.
Its a flawed system, but my rates have gone up twice in the past two years and coverage has gone down. The fix sure as hell isnt working for me.

Same for me. That's because the bill that passed wasn't a fix, it was a series of bandaids. We just covered some of the most gaping wounds with bandaids because a real fix would never have passed successfully through Congress. Bandaids are better than nothing, but we need a complete overhaul of the system which includes at the very least a public option. I want Medicare-for-all, though. It would be the cheapest, easiest, and most cost-effective method to implement.
