There are Waffle Houses in Virginia, and the denizens of that region call any carbonated beverage a coke. It must be the south. I know some people from Virginia who definitely do not match the stereotype posed; but I have met a lot more that do.

Really Ae's description of voters being bused in by church organizations should be a stark warning; that shit can happen anywhere, do not be a complacent voter. This tactic does not stop at abortion-rights in one state either; tea arty shenanigans again. This is how they will fight, too bad the other side does not round up their blind sheep in trucks and drag them to the voting booths also, oh wait, that would be dishonest.

"Now you see that evil will always triumph... because good is dumb."

The Waffle House thing brings an image to mind. I never understood the appeal of Waffle House, but they are all over the south.

Being from the North-East, I've always had an image in my mind of a typical north eastern, rural, republican voter. I think of them as Maple Syrup Conservatives. (I may not be alone in use of that label). They tend to be social conservatives, but that's more a default position for them. They're not militant about it. As long as you don't get in the way of them being white, hetero, church-goers, they're pretty unconcerned about what sorts of crazy shit you want to get up to in your own farmhouse. When no one else is around, they're likely to ask you about your crazy shit and if it's really as fun as they hear. Where they're outspoken is in fiscal matters, and they're big on responsible government. They prefer it smaller, because smaller is cheaper, and they liked Reagan well enough but they liked Eisenhower more. Even the ones who weren't born until after Eisenhower was dead like him better. They don't all keep a sugar bush, but they all wish they did. The tourists pay upward of $50 a gallon for the good stuff.

I could ramble on about it for a while, but where I'm going with this is that Soy has put a new label in my head:

    Waffle House Republicans.

note this well: you can't get maple syrup in a Waffle House.

I respectfully disagree that this should be some kind of warning. In contrast, it should be celebrated. Im sure there are "liberal" organizations that do the same thing...in fact im sure i have heard the same argument you just made on some of the conservative talk shows i occasionally listen to as they bitched and moaned how busloads of democrats were being dropped off at the booths. But in the end, thats all they could do was bitch because there is nothing wrong with organizing a community, be it a church group, GLBT group, Seniors group or whatever and getting them to the polls.

I disagree: Those people who are being brought in maybe otherwise would not vote. And while I think voter turnout is too small, when a few specific organizations can get the funding to bus their ... followers to a voting station it unbalances the voter turnout. I have never researched it previously, but I don't know of any liberal equivalent to that sort of thing. I know we have all kinds of liberal rallies and such here in Portland, and in many urban centers. I would also disagree with large liberal groups dragging out the people who are otherwise to uninformed/busy/lazy whatever to get involved. But this tactic is widely employed by churches which seem to have a lot more money than most LBGTQ, etc.

If they are not motivated enough to vote unless someone holds their hands, I don't know that they are motivated and well informed enough to be good decision makers when voting. Likewise, they may be voting purely out of group-think and not because they went, got informed and made the effort to take part.

Providing a transport service to people who may not otherwise have access is totally acceptable. But often that is targeted as well...

I think I have asked you a few times in the past. Also, my imagined image is fun for play - but I'm not kidding myself. I don't really know what goes on, generally, in the minds of rural north-east republicans. I know a bunch of them (I'm related to a few as well), but it's a small sample size.

Worse than a small sample, every single one of them has been polluted/corrupted by having interacted with me.

I appreciate the offer, Scott, and I won't waste the opportunity: where do you stand on maple syrup?

    Cheers,

Re: Virginian Republican legislature is complete shit!

So - a question or three.

When is use of negative stereotype acceptable?
Why are people who are otherwise intolerant of certain stereotypes embracing, or leveraging, other specific stereotypes?
Speaking of "busing people to polls"...brings another odd question to mind; Why is one group busing people to polls looked upon favorably with nothing but anecdotal data regarding motive and another group busing people to polls looked upon unfavorably with nothing but anecdotal data regarding motive?

LOL, Maple Syrup huh? Well, as a kid i hated the real maple syrup, i preferred Mrs Butterworth over all of them, Aunt Jemima was a close second. Now that im older and more matured, i really like the home grown (Vermont anyway) Maple syrup. But like you said, the good stuff is expensive, so its not that often that i have it.

I think it might be measurable; archival data research ... but I am lazy and underfunded.

I think the question of their rights makes a LGBTQ group motivated to defend themselves without much funding or coercion. A comfortable middle class American who may not have any intention of voting being taken by a church group to a voting place is voting for a very different reason. It could go either way, but I can't think of any organization that is "liberal" that is equivalent to the church. LGBTQ groups are groups because they are concerned about those things. Their members are not there to worship and happen to vote on the side as part of a group function. Here are some other possibilities: Gun rights groups are groups who might facilitate voting also. They are the gun owners whose rights are in question. What liberal church-like group brings anti-gun voters in to make sure they don't win? we could make a similar scenario for abortion rights. Most groups that facilitate voting are very specific to causes and their members came into that group to facilitate voting. The church... well that's very broad and not designed to facilitate voting like that. People are not at church to vote, but church is taking them there.

In any case, I kick myself in the ass as I say things like this because I hate to think that somebody "shouldn't vote." Unfortunately...

If given the opportunity, every religious organization will try and force their beliefs upon everyone else. Except Discordians because the natural world proves us right every day.
