I don't know WTF you're doing with "Dry Dock" hefe in Denver. Your docks must be very dry.

But if you want to sent me some good American hefe, I'll send you some good hotdogs and/or sausage.

That list is invalid because it lumps Bravarian hefewiezen in with Schwabian hefewiezen and they are very different. I much prefer the Schwabian myself but I am biased because I live in the Schwabian part of Germany.

    Invalid?

It seems like the better of both styles get higher ratings even if we mingle types.

Any system of taxonomy has shortcomings. Different sets of categories can be more or less useful, but no ordering is without faults. There are also problems with subjective judgement. I don't think those problems make judgement worthless, but they do prevent the edges from being sharply defined. I do think that some beers are better than others, and The Beer Advocate has been a useful resource for me in the past.

Maybe they'd be interested in hearing your proposal to sub-divide the hefewiezen category.

In the mean time, I'd like to add you to the list of people who are offering to send me beer.

    Cheers,

Re: I feel so much better about the future of the world...

Oregon was one of the pioneers of micro in the US and I have been drinking infinite varieties of beer since I was a late teenager. Widmer is located here and has one of the most celebrated and recognized hefs in the US. The standard by which most Americans gauge their hef is the unfiltered pilsner style we see allover now.

I have never had a true hef, but when my brother was overseas he said atrue German hef is not even similar to the flagship American hef.

Personally I don't care for hef much, I like a low IBU and generous malt with a clear finish. Everyone I know calls themselves a "hop-head" and they are drinking these unbelievably hoppy beers (Ninkasi is in my hometown and all of their beers taste too green), Terminal Gravity IPA, Broken Halo IPA, Hop Stoopid, etc...

I like my true golden-belgians, dopple bock, reds, golden, amber and an occasional porter or stout, but pils, wheats and anything hoppy (read IPA) is not to my taste.

I would like to go to another country some day just to eat and drink... <sigh>

    AetheLove,

Would love to but I have no way to ship it from here. The rules for German mail are unclear to me and the rules for using my American mail are very clear regarding shipping alcohol: not allowed.

Don't sweat it, Gumbo. I have access to a fair sample of beers from medium to large German producers.

It was sad for me when my favourite German restaurant no longer had Paulaner (on tap), but they switched to Weihenstephaner - so no tears here.

[Soy: if you like maltier brews, you might like Paulaner's Dunkel, or their Salvatore. They're not the best, but they do seem to be widely available in the states]

What surprises me most about American hefes isn't that they are or aren't good (I've found some that I like), it's that most of the ones I've tried are unlike a German (Bavarian) hefe. There are a large number of German producers, but even though they taste different they are all recognizably the same style.

For most American examples, if their goal was to produce something similar to (say) Ayinger, or Erdinger Hefe, then they have completely failed. I think some of them are tasty brews, but I've only had a few domestic hefes that are similar to the German ones. Clearly, more sampling is indicated.

I sometimes wonder if there are (in Germany, like in the States) small breweries that produce amazing things but only have local or regional distribution. It was like that in the UK. I eventually learned that if I was in a good pub the best way to order was to ask the barman what was good. I almost always got something I'd never heard of and was amazing.

... and look what we've done... this thread now true to its title!

    Cheers,

    AetheLove
