It does seem like there is a lesson to be learned in there somewhere.

I get it! It's a metaphor about how churches are dependent on handouts from their congregants!

    It's a good lesson.

Providing help without encouraging dependency is tricky.

Fortunately food stamp programs have limits and rules so they try to keep people from abusing it. I collected for a while when I was unemployed and down and out, as soon as I got income again they reduced it and as soon as I had money in my pocket it was gone.

Most people on food stamps are also on unemployment; the average collector of UI is a white male aged 30ish who uses it for less than six months. Maximum food stamps per household here in Oregon is 200 bucks. It is hard to abuse for very long because they start forcing you to jump through hoops and do things that force you to get a job.

The people who are on them for life tend to be people with severe health or mental problems on fixed incomes. There are not very many of those with the fortitude to jump through the hoops necessary and they usually are not able to provide for themselves.

I have posted these links before too... I am tired of digging things up; we all have the google.

True, I think they should interview people like every so often, and ask them so what are you plans, how do you intend to get off the food stamps, what's stopping you from making more money or getting a job. I know that the economy is still pretty messed up, but even before the recession you had SOME people abusing the system, not looking for work or only working part time because they were already use to the benefits. Obviously if someone is disabled or not able to work, and need to be on food stamps their whole life, I'm okay with that too.

It costs money to interview people. You would have to get the government to say the cost benefit is greater then 30,000 or whatever the pay would be per year for an interviewer. You would also need them by region since it was cost to much to pay for transportation. I doubt it would be worth it due to time constraints and possible savings...

Maybe interview only ppl that have been on it for more than 2 years, just to make sure they actually need it and are not taking advantage?
