Re: Just....I don't know...prius over-exposure perhaps?
The oil (or coal, etc) is sitting in the ground. It is ready to burn. Sure, there is extraction cost, and something needs to be built in which to burn it. But the energy is stored in the oil. Same for nuclear fission. The radioactive material is already in the earth.
People who talk about hydrogen energy aren't talking about huge gaseous-hydrogen reserves that we can mine and distribute and then combust (creating, as Hanibal says, water). You have to use an energy source (electricity) to get the hydrogen (by cracking water - electrolysis). In this sense, hydrogen sort of works like a battery. This process also requires some infrastructure - but additionally, you have to consume energy to MAKE the hydrogen. Hydrogen is not a primary source of power. It's an intermediate stage.
There may be some new tech that can recover hydrogen from something else more efficiently than simply electrolysing water. I've done it, as a fun experiment. A bottle full of H2 and O2 makes a really nice pop when you ignite it.
Burning hydrogen is cleaner: you get water. I don't know if there are (relatively) efficient engines, or if fuel-cell technology is up to where we'd all call it "mature." Fuel cells are interesting in that they can work with a hydrocarbon source of hydrogen (like an alcohol) instead of needing pure hydrogen. There are other types of fuel cells. Some of them don't use hydrogen, but of course then they make something other than water.

I'm all for cleaner technology relating to generating power, vehicles, etc...
But PLEASE let me still have access to gasoline in the future so I can drive my '67 Chevy... That is all. I love my classics. Keep some sort of reserve, plleeeaaaassse!
