Re: SCOTUS decides on Prop 8 :D

You guys also have to remember, when we use the term 'slave' in our society, we think to the brutality behind our own very recent civil rights movements. Its filled with plenty of hate and laws designed to keep people less than human. That was not the case in much of the Bible. Slavery wasn't what you and I think of it today. It wasn't always butterfly kisses and unicorn poop, but it wasn't how we treated our slaves in this country.

In fact, look back and what Kanati posted about the Hammurabi code. The arrangement of slavery was nearly identical to marriage. Different time, different place. Different meaning.

Once again, the term has been changed (getting back to the term of marriage). To us in America, slavery has a supremely negative connotation. It synonymous with the degradation of human life and dignity. It was the cause of a war that nearly tore our country apart. Of course we're going to look at slavery in a negative way, and apply our own understanding of that word in any text in which we see it.

And exactly what time period were slaves treated good?

    Fair enough. Lets look then.

This is the scripture you quoted.

14 He says, ‘I will build myself a great palace

    and so all went well.
Is that not what it means to know me?”
    declares the Lord.
17 “But your eyes and your heart

    Read this carefully. Its saying...

Careful to those of you who build your houses by being a prick.
Don't make your people work for nothing, they aren't your slaves idiot.
    Pay them.

Does this make you a rock star? Are you someone special since you made others work for you without just compensation?
Did your dad build his home by honorable means? Did I (God) not give him beer on tap, and an Xbox
even though he paid people, and treated them with respect even if it cost him more?
He (your dad) defended the cause of the poor and needy, and so it all worked out.
But in your eyes and your heart, are set only on dishonest gain, on exploiting Pedro and his brother Raul to make your palace.

Now please... read the verses you quoted me, and tell me if you really think this passage is talking about the endorsement of slavery.

Here is the online Bible I got this from.

I'm not defending slavery. I'm just pointing out that you have a certain set of ideas about that word. But read my above post. Then talk to me.

So i have to ask why is your interpretation right and mine is wrong? All you just did was your interpretation of someone elses interpretation of someone elses interpretation of ...... for thousands of years. You think i cant put down an interpretation of how it directly effects someone owning people and making them do his work without paying them?

I give you credit for being pretty intelligent. How about throw a bit back.

I know you're intelligent. That's not up for debate. That's why I took the chance that by posting the verses you quoted, you could see that the Bible isn't condoning slavery in this particular passage, in fact it's saying 'don't do it'! I just wanted you to read it and tell me if you really think the wording used here is meant to make people into slaves?

    Does anyone else?

Trust me DC, there are several other books in the old testament that would support your argument better than this one.
