Great idea, just put a line right below the "out of state purchases" box when I file my taxes, I'll be sure to claim it all.

I'm all for collecting a sales tax from internet sales, I really don't care how they do it though.

Just from reading that piece, I kind of understand why they revised the STOCK act. The major concern seemed to be a loophole that allowed members of Congress to engage in insider trading, and that's still covered. The revision still requires disclosure from the President, Congress, and many other high-level government employees....in other words, the people who'd most likely be taking advantage of the loophole....without disclosing the finances of a truckload of people (28,000) who aren't elected, but whose employer just happens to be the Government. If the purpose of the bill was to stop insider trading by members of Congress, the fact that Congressmen are still required to disclose their finances should take care of that.
That internet tax though....I kinda see where their coming from, trying to get an influx of new tax dollars that probably SHOULD'VE been paid but haven't been....but the tax codes need to be simplified by an order of magnitude before I think that is even remotely feasible.

Re: Internet sales taxes? Here we go again...
Who's the author of the WSJ op piece? Whether the the tax is a good idea or a bad idea is almost lost amidst the inflammatory language (hyperbole and exaggeration) of the article.
"... fundamentally change interstate commerce,..."
That's a pretty sweeping statement
"...And you thought ObamaCare was jammed through Nancy Pelosi's Democratic House in a hurry...."
Say what you will about the ACA (or ObamaCare, etc) but this is not a phrase designed to generate logical thought but rather an emotional reaction.
I realize it's an op-ed but sheesh. Why bother with meaningful and factual driven analyses when rabble-rousing is far more entertaining (and proiftable for a page-generating ad-dependent business.
As for the gist of the article - I think sales tax ought to collected equitably, regardless of the business model, from all businesses that meet the taxing guidelines. This is not something that can be done over night. There's no quick fix. Writing and passing laws under the assumption that we can write code to "figure it all out after the fact" is asinine.
But....it's Washington. Did anyone REALLY expect different? Can I interest you in some of my tax free products?
