Clearly speed limits should be abolished.

    This is a poor analogy.

Speeding is a safety issue. There are no negative consequences to having speed limits. There are, however, with voter ID laws which the Supreme Court has recognized. Secondly, your poor analogy attempts to infer that voter fraud is an issue by using 20% of drivers speeding as a comparison. You should have used 1/1000 of 1 percent but that wouldn't have helped your analogy anyways.

That might be true if you used at least one item that was real but seeing as there is no real number to use for voter fraud we'll just keep acting like its a minor issue instead of fixing it.

I guess I am a bit fuzzy on the whole good/bad thing. Even if it's addressing a small problem, where is the harm in verifying citizenship in order to register to vote? It doesn't seem complicated to me. Perhaps I am missing something?

Wrong. It becomes a problem when it's shown to be a problem.

Since that hasn't happened, there's no need to pass laws that disenfranchise minorities and the poor.

Because those who press for these laws (conservatives) try to make it exceedingly difficult and thus turn away those with lesser intellectual and/or financial means. If I'm working two low paying jobs and have no vehicle or license, it's a hindrance for me to comply.

And why would non-us citizens be voting? It defies logic.

Have you ever had the urge to vote in German elections Gumby?

Well, if you're charging for the ID, or making it difficul to acquire, then you're creating a barrier between citizens and the most fundamental right in our democracy.

If you can't measure the problem, how do you know that there is one, and if you fix it, how will you know that your fix worked?

The instances where people get caught show there is a problem. No fix is perfect. Thats a disingenuous argument to even attempt to make.

Im going to add an example. Most shoplifters dont get caught yet stores spend millions every year on security. The only way to quantify the amount of theft is p&l's. We cant do that with voting but there can be a very real loss applied if those votes are putting people in offices that are willing to keep ignoring the issue and putting programs in place or increasing programs that is readily being taken advantage of by people that have no right to vote.

And exactly how does an across the board voter id or verification of residency disenfranchise minorities and the poor any more then it would every citizen? I think there is some failed logic being implied to that entire argument.
