This is what today's news does to a story...

Or what historians do to history. You decide which. Thought this was an interesting look at modern day news writing.

National Guard units seeking to confiscate a cache of recently banned assault weapons were ambushed by elements of a Para-military extremist faction. Military and law enforcement sources estimate that 72 were killed and more than 200 injured before government forces were compelled to withdraw.

That was a foreign government not one elected by the citizens.

Kind of hard to make that comparison.

And for the record, today's Minutemen are retards.

Clio should sue you for slander and libel.

Thank you for posting so many examples of bad news writing.

Well really it wasn't a foreign government. As for this, the point was to see how the way news is handled today would portray the "shot heard round the world".

Sure it was. It was the British government that was occupying the colonies, forcibly taxing the citizenry without any form of representation. That was the reason for going to war.

It wasn't about gun rights. It's a lousy comparison.

And this story trying to imply that killing US law enforcement being somehow patriotic, is sickening.

That wasn't my take on the story at all. In fact, the story never once made any reference to the "extremists" as patriots. It called them criminals. You're really reading into this man.

Also, your history is just, well, wrong. Unless you think the Revolutionary War was led by American Indians...

British colonization of the Americas - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

These were British colonies. Every colonist was a British subject.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Revolutionary_War

Taxation without representation was a simple reference to the colonies being a part of the British Empire but having no representation in Parliament.

No taxation without representation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    Maybe that helps.

Anyway... At the start of the revolutionary war, about 20% of the people in the colonies remained loyal to the crown. This exercise (the article written in a pro-government propaganda format like news is written today) is interesting because it causes one to wonder - if news coverage then were run like it is today, how many people would have supported the rebels?

    Sorry, Laz,

While the writing style and language as well as subjects are modern, it is a very clearly slanted discussion. And I agree with Trigger that the suggestion of citizens attacking the national-guard is a terrible idea especially in that analogy. Very slanted and not remotely comparable.

So what was the point of posting this story?

It referenced these 'paramilitaries' as if they were the same freedom fighters that started the Revolutionary War. Is this story really trying to make that comparison?
