Re: Do you really have the right to carry a gun in public?
Haha yea this thread kinda spiraled out of control. I think that main issue with rights outside of the home should be a separation and clarification of defensive protection and offensive protection. I don't mind you carrying a gun, but you shouldn't go looking for a fight, or go into a situation to assist when it's not warranted(ie speculation).
If no one is in immediate danger then your gun should never come out. Your role is to call the cops and let them sort it out.

I have a Yellow Lab. She is the World's best watchdog.........but also the World's worst guard dog. Barks like a mofo, but wouldn't hurt a fly. Decent deterrant, though. She certainly wouldn't be quiet if someone were to try and come in while we were home. Just loud enough to make the neighbor's house look like an easier target.

Re: Do you really have the right to carry a gun in public?
I barely know my neighbors. Part of that is because I'm not the most sociable person, part of that is just because people are less likely to really "know" their neighbors these days....and I just don't live in that kind of a town lol. I don't particularly want my neighbors anywhere near my property with a gun.
I think Dex was saying if anyone messed with his dog, that he (Dex) was going to make the person suffer. I'm thinking something along the lines of starting with kneecaps, and working up from there

I would likely use fingernail clippers......till there was nothing left.
Also, the Native Americans used Perch (the fish). They would stick them head-first into the rectums of those who made them unhappy. When the person tried to pull out the fish, the dorsal fins would perforate their rectum, and they would die an extremely slow and painful death (blood poisoning). Ouch.

Just remember, when seconds count the cops are only minutes away. I feel as a society we have an obligation to protect our fellow law abiding members against law breaking members. Heck, I was at the Rangers' game last night, and was ready to jump in a fight helping a guy I had never met before because it looked like 3 guys were about to jump him, and he had no backup, but the cops finally showed up. I have my CHL along with other training, and I am not out every night like Batman trying to solve the world's problems, BUT if those problems find their way into my area of influence then I have no issues putting an end to them.

Oh, and fuck second chances. Go look at the stats for how many criminals get 2+ chances only to wind up right back in jail. Come ask me for money to feed your family, and you are likely to get it. Come try to take my stuff to provide food for your family and I have no issues with donating a few dollars of lead to you.

Why should someone involved in neighbor hood watch programs be any different then any other person? IMO they shouldn't. If they proceed to violate the law then they should be punished and if they dont then they shouldnt. Its just another case of trying to over think and make more laws that in effect dont change anything.

Why do they need a gun in the first place? Their job as watch is to observe and call the cops. If you have a gun and you try to stop a potential robbery, you are basically taking the law into your hands. How do you have anymore of a right to be on someone else's property than the person you are trying to stop?

Re: Do you really have the right to carry a gun in public?
If his job is to stand and report a crime in progress, why shouldn't he have a gun for his personal defense. Just because a watch person has a gun, doesn't mean they will automatically inject themselves into a situation where they don't belong.
If I were on neighborhood patrol, you bet I would be carrying. Absolutely. Not to stop anything other than a threat, though.
I also would never work overnights at a convienience store again without at least one pistol visible on me.
