Not implying that is your stance, but I have heard countless people on the "tougher gun restrictions" side of the aisle say there is nothing to worry about with creating a national gun registry of some sort, or of requiring more detailed and lengthy background checks, thus in short providing more detailed information about gun owners, and more importantly ME to the government. I am told there is nothing to worry about because the government can be trusted to treat this information with the utmost respect and care, and never use it to my detriment.
Now, when I, and others, point out that many of the people responsible for the most notable gun crimes have documented mental issues that should have prevented them from buying guns to begin with I see a logical solution in making mental health records part of the background check process to prevent these people from buying guns. The first response is that there is concern that this information could be either mishandled by our government, OR even worse used by our government for purposes that may not be 100% ethical or desirable.
Maybe it's just me, but that sounds just a tad bit hypocritical to tell me to trust the government with my information, but not the information of others.-Lazarus- liked this post

TLDR - That guy is a basket case, and all his doctors knew it, how did he ever get to buy a gun? "Maybe we should find a way to prevent basket cases from buying guns?" "What, the fact that they are a basket case is privileged information that only their doctor should know!"
I agree, huh?

I for one dont want the government poking around in my medical history. Granted im a bit screwed on everything i see the VA for. However the only solution i would come close to agreeing with would be a reporting system. When you become diagnosed the doctor has to call in that issue and just as meaningful when you have it under control that should also be reported. Of course your still left with what if the meds begin to fail or they stop taking them.

For the record I don't want the government in anyone's business, BUT if we are gung ho for tougher gun regulations in an effort to reduce gun violence then I say let's start with those who are certified bat shit crazy before we start regulating those who aren't.

Based on my concerns with gvmt ethics as related to medical/legal issues I'm not one of the people jumping to turn over more data (even if they already know it all).
"Give it to them, nothing to hide" is a specious argument regardless of topic.
